PRIMARY PURPOSE Prepares procedure rooms for endoscopic procedures, transports patients, processes scopes and instruments, provide technical services, assists during routine and complex endoscopic procedures, assists with clerical duties in support of the department's documentation to ensure activities meet operating and Parkland standards.

Must complete Associates GI Technical Specialist (GTS) or Advanced GI Technical Specialist (AGTS) training from the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, Inc. (SGNA) within six months of hire or placement in job.

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS

Education

- Must have two years' experience in a procedure area or general patient care.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

- Must have current CPR-HeartSaver certification from one of the following:

- American Heart Association

- American Red Cross Rescuer

- Military Training Network

Skills or Special Abilities

- Must demonstrate knowledge of therapeutic and interventional procedures including Bronchoscopy, ERCP, EUS, EUS with FNA, EMR, etc. in order to assist with all endoscopic procedures.

- Must demonstrate a working knowledge of endoscopic equipment and accessories in order to maintain high level disinfection, sterilization, monitor its general working condition and assist with its use.

- Must be able to recognize and correct deviations from infection prevention procedures.

- Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, visitors and hospital staff orally and in writing. - Must be able to set priorities and perform under stressful situations.

- Must demonstrate patient centered/patient valued behaviors.

- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in meeting age related and handicapped patients' needs.

- Must be able to work a change in shift, flexible hours when work or on-call responsibilities require such changes.

Responsibilities

1. Assists the endoscopic team during routine and complex operative procedures by functioning in the role of endoscopy associate technician, ensuring activities meet the needs of the team and patient.

2. Prepares procedure rooms, including pre-procedure setup and post procedure cleaning and decontamination. Conducts proper testing prior to patient use to ensure all equipment is operational. Troubleshoots equipment to resolve operational issues. Communicates with physician, in conjunction with circulator, to assure all anticipated equipment is available and functioning for individual procedures. Initiates appropriate actions on issues which require a higher level of intervention; refers complex or irresolvable issues to supervisor. 3. Maintains and handles endoscopes to applicable infection prevention standards, including leak testing, initial cleaning, disinfecting and processing. Handles clean and dirty scopes according to protocol, maintaining infection prevention standards. Prepares dirty reusable equipment for sterilization including initial cleaning.

4. Ensures proper operation of scope processing machines, including minor troubleshooting. Maintains appropriate quality control scope processing documentation. Performs preventive maintenance, testing and documentation per manufacturer specifications. Notifies supervisor of maintenance issues requiring higher levels of intervention.

5. Maintains inventory control functions for supplies and equipment. Ensures rooms are properly stocked daily, maintains sufficient supplies/materials according to caseload. Maintains emergency supply carts. Notifies supervisor of supply shortages.

6. Communicates patient data in an accurate, objective, confidential manner, to coworkers and management, in order to ensure safe patient care.

7. Transports patients to and from procedure area. Provides status information and communications for physicians, nurses, patients, and family members as appropriate for the effective operation of the unit.

8. Fully participates as a team member by assisting nursing and medical staff with assigned procedures and patient care duties. Strives for above and beyond in every customer service opportunity.

9. Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland Health & Hospital System.

10. Participates in quality improvement activities. Maintains quality control documentation and completes quality improvement audits and inventories as assigned.

11. Demonstrates, through practice behaviors, knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Gastroenterology area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.

12. Stays abreast of developments, advancements and trends in Gastroenterology by attending in-house seminars, reading in-house publications, and integrating acquired knowledge into current work practices. Strongly encouraged to attend a minimum of one outside educational activity annually.

13. Serves as an expert resource to GI Lab personnel. Provides training and orientation to new employees and students as required.

14. Maintains a positive working relationship with patients, medical and administrative hospital staff, visiting physicians, visitors, interns, and students to ensure the personal comfort and safety of patients and that procedure area activities meet the needs of all users.
