JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION: Acts as the liaison between prescribers, patients, and pharmacy operations in order to maintain and cultivate business. The Specialty Pharmacy Technician promotes GHS' pharmacy service offerings to ensure that patients, hospitals, physician practices, and other related entities and agencies are aware of the value-added benefits provided. The Specialty Pharmacy Technician also resolves any service concerns and relays potential opportunities to department leadership. Responsible for assisting pharmacists in preparing and distributing drugs, maintaining the drug inventory and maintenance of records under the supervision of a registered pharmacist for the age population served, as defined in the department's scope of service.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

JOB FUNCTIONS

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

1. Collaborates with health system and pharmacy leadership, physicians and support staff to identify and promote adoption of expanded pharmacy program utilization.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

* Remains current on her drug access and pharmacy program offerings
* Coordinates educational activities, business opportunities, and sales leads with internal and external customers.
* Articulates program capabilities, benefits and differentiators.
* Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas timely and accurately.

2. Streamlines the pharmacist-physician-patient relationship by facilitating refill requests and other communications between the pharmacy, prescriber, and patient, as needed.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

* Recommends and executes enhancements to sales collateral and marketing efforts
* Continually works to identify needed program enhancements, opportunities for streamlined workflow and efficiency
* Maintains consistent contact with all parties to expand business and to keep abreast of and resolve current issues, as well as resolve potential issues

3. Procures and distributes patient medication per physician request, pharmacist request or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

* Identifies and fills replacement medications on emergency crash carts, OR carts and floor stock accurately.
* Compounds sterile products accurately and in accordance with USP <797>.
* Compounds non-sterile products accurately and in accordance with USP <795>.
* Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas timely and accurately.

4. Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies, procedures and protocols and within specified time frame.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
* Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations as requested by the pharmacy purchaser.
* Rotates, restocks, and replaces outdated and unusable drugs according to policy.
* Prepackages medications in unit of use containers for pediatric and neonatal population in accordance with policy.

5. Contributes to the effective operation of the department.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
* Picks up orders, requisitions and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds.
* Enters medication orders charges, and credits into pharmacy computer system accurately.
* Professionally answers the telephone, requests at the window, and makes STAT deliveries to patient care areas when requested.
* Maintains logs, records and other required documentation accurately; files in appropriate locations.
* Maintains logs of narcotic records, prepares narcotics for pharmacist check, and maintains security of narcotics.

6. Participates in quality improvement activities of the department.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
* Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner.
* Conducts quality monitors, collects data and completes documentation as assigned.
* Completes assigned cycle counts in a timely manner.
* Collects and assesses quality data, communicates results to appropriate parties, and takes any actions needed to address and/or correct quality opportunities.

7. Demonstrates effectiveness in supervising assigned staff.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
* Supervises technician staff and processes and recommends changes as needed on a daily basis.
* Provides leadership to maximize the effectiveness of the work performed daily.
* Investigates and identifies the cause of a problem before taking corrective action.
* Serves as a resource by sharing knowledge on technical issues.

8. Performs all other duties as assigned.

* Maintains competency required for current job title / position.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
5-years pharmacy tech experience in a retail or hospital environment required

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent required.

SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Pharmacy Technician Certificate from the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy

HIPAA REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Medical records w/ limit to job functions both paper and electronic, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, medical records related to quality/data, patient financial information and 3rd party billing, information related to patient location, religious beliefs, research information, and/or public health records, employee prescriptions, investigatory information.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, transporting medications, and receives meds and/or orders.
