DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) leads UC Santa Cruz in providing educational equity and a welcoming environment for students with disabilities. The DRC identifies legally mandated Accommodations that address disabling barriers and work with faculty and students to remove barriers. The DRC educates campus on disability diversity and equal educational access. The team ensures compliance with State, Federal and local laws and ensures compliance with UC policies.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction, the DRC Assistant Director for Auxiliary Services is responsible for overseeing the areas of accessible technology, alternate media production, general classroom accommodations, exam and communications accommodations, ensuring a high quality of services in all auxiliary services and compliance with ADA mandates. Shared responsibility with the leadership team for the day-to-day office operations of the DRC spaces. The incumbent will share responsibility for in-person decision-making, student / staff crisis resolution, and emergency response with DRC Director and Assistant Director for Accommodations. The incumbent is responsible for supervising all Auxiliary Services full-time staff and directing the work of student staff.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $90,000 - $98,000 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. The salary shown above is the budgeted range the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Auxiliary Services Supervision

  • Exercises leadership in development and implementation of a comprehensive auxiliary services unit, including but not limited to: strategic planning, program planning, service workflow, process improvement, assessment and evaluation.
  • Establishes goals, daily operations, and workflow for Adaptive Technology, Alternative Media Program, Classroom Accommodations, Note Taking, Exam Accommodations, the DRC Testing Center, and Communications Services.
  • Consults with and maintains campus partnerships with ITS, Registrar, and other partners.
  • Provides backup to aux services staff as needed for absences, leaves, or high-demand service periods (for example: final exams).
  • Provides feedback and needed system improvements for the Accommodate system and works with system coordinator to implement change.
  • Provides support to auxiliary services team and in cases that are escalated for resolution, requirement engagement in interactive process.
  • Assists with the elevation of faculty concerns regarding aux services implementation.
  • Serves as the key adviser to the Director in the areas of auxiliary services and disability services.
  • Makes recommendations to DRC Director re: campus policy changes in response to changing legal and emerging technological information.
  • Raises issues regarding resource levels and need for new resources or staffing to the attention of the Director.
  • Develops Training and Workshops for student affiliates on how to access and use accessible technology services.
  • Coordinates and provide periodic Aux Services training to DRC staff as needed and for new staff.

20% - DRC Leadership

  • Shared responsibility with the leadership team for the day to day office operations of the DRC spaces. Rotates primary responsibility for in person decision making, student / staff crisis resolution, and emergency response with DRC Director and Assistant Director for Accommodations.
  • Participates in leadership team meetings and lead planned initiatives (may include safety planning, fundraising, etc.).
  • Resource Management: works with the Business Manager and Director to procure, maintain, and update resources needed for the provision of auxiliary services including: licenses, physical equipment, computers, etc.
  • Shared responsibility for inventory management.
  • Meets periodically with Assistant Director for Accommodations to address and resolve shared concerns.

20% - Employee Supervision

  • Responsible for day-to-day supervision and performance evaluation of DRC Auxiliary Service employees, services and programs.
  • Interviews, selects, trains, direct reports.
  • Recommends corrective action as need to address performance issues.
  • Works with staff to facilitate disability accommodations.

15% - Direct Student Services

  • Shared oversight of provision of communications services to deaf / hard of students including interpreting, live captioning, and media captioning.
  • Meets with students as needed to facilitate services.
  • Oversight of service contractors.
  • Coordinates classroom moves for access.

5% - Continuing Education

  • Keeps apprised of all new changes and developments in auxiliary services in higher education.
  • Maintains updated expertise regarding legal mandates through participation in national and state list-serves, professional development, publications and research.
  • Supports DRC business needs as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in related area and /or equivalent experience / training.
  • Knowledge of the functions and processes of auxiliary services.
  • Knowledge of various disabilities / impacts and social and cultural disability issues.
  • Leadership and organizational skills to manage a diverse staff of professionals within the Disability Resource Center.
  • Ability to coordinate and assign varying work schedules.
  • Advanced knowledge of the ADA interactive process in higher education classrooms.
  • Skills related to managing communication with instructors and other organizational entities regarding student disability-related accommodations.
  • Thorough knowledge of captioning and word processing software.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations governing the provision of services to persons with disabilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience in providing auxiliary services (alt media, communications services).

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
