Sr. Scientist (Emulsion Chemistry)

Bio-Rad Laboratories
parental leave, paid time off, 401(k), profit sharing
United States, Pleasanton
June 03, 2023

At the Digital Biology Center (a division of Bio-Rad) we use microfluidic chips to generate nanoliter-sized droplets as reaction vessels to power an extremely precise digital nucleic acid measurement method (droplet digital PCR). Now that we've solidified our market lead in digital PCR, we're expanding into new applications for our core technology. Our partition technology will open up new avenues in basic life sciences research and will become a new paradigm in clinical diagnostics.

At the heart of our digital technology is the ability to stabilize an aqueous droplet in engineered fluid through designing and synthesizing novel surfactants. These unique surfactants allow us to control and alter interfacial properties whereby we can enable and catalyze unique in-droplet chemistries. In turn these chemistries enable novel applications in the digital biology space.

How You'll Make An Impact:

  • Create, synthesize, and purify novel surfactants for use in microfluidic emulsion-based technologies.
  • Responsible for designing and conducting experiments, analyzing, and interpreting data, as well as communicating and presenting results to team-members and management.
  • Write clear plans, reports and SOPs.
  • Mentoring and coaching of junior staff.
  • Be a subject matter expert for emulsion chemistries to solve problems in multi-disciplinary teams in a fast- paced, dynamic, scientifically driven, team-oriented, and customer-focused environment inclusive of research, development, and manufacturing.

What You Bring:

  • Ph.D. degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, or molecular biology with strong chemistry background, and 2+ years of industrial experience. Or M.S. with 8+ years' industrial experiences.
  • Must have anhydrous chemistry and organic synthesis experience. Strong background knowledge and experience with analytic instruments. Experience with fluorescence and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy is essential.
  • Proven capacity to thrive in a multidisciplinary setting while working alongside engineers, biologists, software developers and manufacturing professionals.
  • Track record of self-motivated design, execution, and analysis of experiments on aggressive schedules in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, logical and analytical thinking, ability to multitask, work independently and on a team, and the ability to learn, troubleshoot, and problem solve.
