Teacher - College and Career Language Course (grade 9)

As outlined in the district's , we recognize the critical need of ensuring students in middle and high school grades have the literacy skills in place in order to access grade level courses and be on track for graduation. In SY 22/23, the district will pioneer a College & Career Language Course in a small number of schools serving grade 6 and 9 students. The course will be offered to students that are well below grade level in reading based on the district's diagnostic data; specifically, students reading at grade 3 and below and students reading at level 4 to 7.

In this pioneer year, the course will be co-taught by a general educator and special educator. Those hired to teach this course will carry a full course load. Additionally, they and their schools will commit to participating in a professional learning community with other teachers that teach this class across the district. The professional learning community will meet throughout the year, participating in ongoing professional development and collaboration, to engage in continuous improvement around the structure and delivery of this course in support of address students' skill gaps.

Teacher is responsible for supporting student achievement in the area of English Language Arts, with special attention to reading in grade 9. Teacher manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required; carries out a variety of student monitoring and control activities; performs related duties as required or assigned.

The teacher serves as general education classroom teacher for grade 9; classes taught will be single grade level while servicing grade level readers performing at the grade K-7 level. Performs duties within a co-teaching setting.


Essential Functions



  • Assesses student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and
  • Routinely utilizes on-going, non-evaluative assessment to inform student learning in a responsive teaching model.
  • Plans and implements appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate kind and level or Utilizes a variety of instructional materials and available multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Develops, adapts, modifies, and individualizes educational materials, resources, techniques, methods, and strategies to meet the needs of students within the City Schools for this course.
  • Assumes direct responsibility for the development of appropriate behavior of students within the school setting by establishing and maintaining effective discipline and management procedures.


  • Manages the behavior of learners in instructional settings to ensure environment is conducive to the learning process and assists and participates in management of student behavior in other parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work site.
  • Coordinates instructional activities and collaborates with others professional staff, both school and non-school-based, as required to maximize learning opportunities.

  • Works in a self-contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or at field work site as
  • Participates in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or
  • Continually assesses student achievement and maintains appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
  • Ensures continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of a student(s) progress.
  • Continually communicates with students on instructional expectations and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations.
  • Manages allotted learning time to maximize student
  • Ensures classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning and that materials are in good condition and assessable to
  • Makes off school site visits to monitor students or confers with employers or site instructors as required.
  • Supports or participates in school-wide student activities and social events and approved fundraising activities.
  • Monitor's student behavior in non-instructional areas as assigned or required and intervenes to control and modify disruptive behavior, reporting to administrator as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, ) to carry out school wide instructional or related activities.
  • May sponsor or coordinate extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.

Desired Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree must be from an accredited college or
  • Valid MSDE standard professional teaching certificate appropriate to the subject
  • Knowledge of federal laws protecting the educational services for students with
  • Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Preferred direct experience with foundational literacy development.
  • Experience working with adolescent learners.
  • Preferred experience with a co-teaching model.
  • Preferred reading certification.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and use of equitable and culturally responsive practices.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards for Literacy.
  • Successful implementation of research-informed best literacy instructional practices including intervention.
  • Knowledge of school's program of studies related to assignments and mission, goals, and organization is preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communications and human relations
  • Ability to select instructional planning, management, and evaluation procedures that relate to students needs and the demands of the instructional environment.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
