Teacher - College & Career Language (grade 6)

As outlined in the district's , we recognize the critical need of ensuring students in middle and high school grades have the literacy skills in place in order to access grade level courses and be on track for graduation. In SY 22/23, the district will pioneer a College & Career Language Course in a small number of schools serving grade 6 and 9 students. The course will be offered to students that are well below grade level in reading based on the district's diagnostic data; specifically, students reading at grade 3 and below and students reading at level 4 and 5. Students enrolled in this course will also participate in their standard English course for their grade level.

In this pioneer year, the course will be co-taught by a general educator and special educator. Additionally, they and their schools will commit to participating in a professional learning community with other teachers that teach this class across the district. The professional learning community will meet throughout the year, participating in ongoing professional development and collaboration, to engage in continuous improvement around the structure and delivery of this course in support of address students' skill gaps.

Teacher is responsible for supporting student achievement in English Language Arts, with special attention to reading in grade 6. Teacher manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required; carries out a variety of student monitoring and control activities; performs related duties as required or assigned.

The teacher serves as for grade 6; classes taught will be single grade level while servicing grade level readers performing at the grade K-3, 4-5 level. Performs duties within a co-teaching setting, or works independently in a unique teaching specialty.


Essential Functions



  • Assesses student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Routinely utilizes on-going, non-evaluative assessment to inform student learning in a responsive teaching model.
  • Plans appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate principles of learning, classroom organizational structures, and kind and level of materials.
  • Develops, adapts, modifies, and individualizes educational materials, resources, techniques, methods, and strategies to meet the needs of students within the City Schools curriculum framework.
  • Assumes direct responsibility for the development of appropriate behavior of students within the school setting by establishing and maintaining effective discipline and management procedures.
  • Implements an instructional program, which provides appropriate learning experiences for each student.
  • Manages the behavior of learners in instructional setting to ensure environment is conducive to the learning process and assists and participates in management of student behavior in other parts of the school and school grounds.
  • Coordinates instructional activities and collaborates with others professional staff both school - and non-school-based, as required to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Utilizes a variety of instructional materials and available multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Request's assistance of and works with resource personnel, as needed.
  • Works in a self-contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or at field work site as assigned.
  • Participates in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
  • Continually assesses student achievement and maintains appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
  • Ensures continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of a student(s) progress.
  • Provides age-appropriate communication with students on instructional expectations and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations.
  • Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.
  • Ensures classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning and that materials are in good condition and assessable to students.
  • Supports or participates in school wide student activities and social events and approved fundraising activities.
  • Monitor's student behavior in non-instructional areas as assigned or required and intervenes to control and modify disruptive behavior, reporting to administrator as appropriate.
  • Request's assistance of and works with resource personnel, as needed.
  • Collaborates with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out school wide instructional or related activities.
  • Participates in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
  • May sponsor or coordinate extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school boards policies and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • Valid MSDE standard professional teaching certificate appropriate in the grade to be taught.
  • Participants in a Maryland State approved resident teacher or alternative teacher certification program may also be considered with the requirement that they must meet Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for teachers by the completion of the program.
  • Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Preferred direct experience with foundational literacy development.
  • Preferred reading certification.
  • Experience working with adolescent learners.
  • Preferred experience with a co-teaching model.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and use of equitable and culturally responsive practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards for Literacy.
  • Successful implementation of research-informed best literacy instructional practices including intervention.
  • Knowledge of City School's program of studies related to assignments and mission, goals, and organization.
  • Excellent in oral, written and human relations skills.
  • Ability to select instructional planning, management, and evaluation procedures that relate to students needs and the demands of the instructional environment.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with diverse groups of students, peers, and parents.
  • Ability to move throughout the room to monitor students and check assignments with a variety of seating and desk organization.
