Wind Project Engineer

The Wind Project Engineer will be responsible for wind projects throughout the entire project life cycle in development, construction, and operation. Responsibilities include the following (including managing consultants as necessary):

  • Due Diligence review of M&A projects/portfolios

  • Constructability guidance and support for prospecting team

  • Preliminary Balance of Plant (BOP) design - site civil, turbine foundation, collection, substation, gen-tie

  • Geotechnical investigations

  • Micrositing for turbine positions, collection/road/gen-tie routing, and substation/switchyard location

  • Preparation of inputs for permitting

  • Preparation of Requests for Proposals from BOP contractors, switchyard contractors, and turbine suppliers

  • Managing Request for Proposal process, performing bid comparison, and making recommendation for award

  • Negotiating BOP and TSA contracts

  • BOP and switchyard design reviews

  • Vetting change order requests from contractors

  • Answering Requests for Information (RFI) from contractors

  • Working with Project Manager during construction to manage contractors and provide AES oversight of project execution

  • Helping steer construction such that the work is done safely and the finished product is high quality, on/under budget, and on/ahead of schedule.

Project Engineers serve as the single point-of-contact for technical and engineering matters for all assigned projects. The Project Engineer functions as the overall technical lead, and engages internal and external SME's throughout the project life, as needed, but retains overall ownership and responsibility at all times. Excellent communication, task management, and planning skills needed, in addition to technical breadth.

The successful candidate will have a depth of experience in the design, engineering, and analysis of wind projects, as well as an in-depth understanding of the architectures and components to build such systems.

The position is in Louisville, CO, and may include up to 25% travel to project locations and partner offices.

Key Responsibilities

Project Execution

  • Project Scope of Work and design standards development

  • Seek and evaluate proposals for engineering services

  • Coordinate engineering consultants to develop project construction drawings and support material

  • Review and comment on design deliverables provided by consultants and contractors for the construction of projects

  • Respond to contractor RFIs during course of construction

  • Perform QA/QC field inspections and punch list development

  • Perform Job Safety Assessments and Safety Walks to identify job-site hazards

  • Review commissioning reports and analyze system performance

  • Budget development and key financial inputs

Project Development

  • Technical project due diligence and project engineering design review

  • Equipment review and selection

  • Engineering Procurement and Construction contract support

  • Turbine Supply Agreement contract support

Engineering Support

  • Design optimization to maximize reliability and reduce cost

  • Collaborate with Operations and Maintenance team to troubleshoot existing systems or develop repair and remediation plans

Growth and Leadership

  • Improve and develop processes for the execution of safe, quality, and high-performance projects

  • Mentor and educate team on changing trends in technology, best practices, and safety

  • Participate in AES's growth planning process by contributing to process improvement task forces and other strategic planning activities

Skills and Qualifications

Primary Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering or equivalent technical field

  • 1 - 3 years professional experience in wind system design, development, construction and analysis

  • Experience with design, construction, and operations for the following for wind projects:

    • MV collection system (underground and overhead)

    • Substation

    • Gen-tie

    • Interconnection switchyard

    • Site civil

    • Turbine foundation

    • Geotechnical

  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD, GIS software and Microsoft Excel

"Plus" Qualifications

  • 5+ years professional experience in wind system design, development, construction and analysis

  • 2+ years experience with energy storage systems and/or PV system design and modeling

  • Graduate degree in Engineering

  • EIT or PE qualifications

  • Experience with AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Matlab, ETAP, PSS/E and other advanced modeling tools

  • Substation/HV design experience

  • OSHA 10-hr or comparable job-site safety certification

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $85,000 and $114,750/Annual; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
