Lead Engineer & Technical Support in Fire Protection Engineering

Seeking to hire experienced Fire Protection Engineering and Technical Support Specialist. These specialists will report to the SRNS Fire Protection Engineering Organization and will be responsible for fire protection related compliance within various facilities at SRS. The Fire Protection Engineering & Technical Support Specialist Advisor is generally acknowledged as one of the highest-level subject matter experts in a staff or lead position for the general function or area supported.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: * Conducting fire hazard analysis * Conducting NFPA/ICC code reviews * Specifying technical aspects of fire protection systems * Ensuring Life Safety compliance * Performing building walkdowns to assess for compliance according to Department of Energy standards. * Conducting Fire Protection Engineering inspection and studies for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities at the Savannah River Site * Scoping technical tasks and develop creative solutions to assigned problems. * Providing limited guidance and direction to less senior engineering professionals. * Developing alternate solutions to existing problems. Evaluating proposals and making recommendations based on proposed projects/tasks in area of assignment. * Delegating and managing portions of the detail work to less-senior personnel. * Demonstrating cost and schedule consciousness through timely completion of assigned tasks and projects. * Preparing manuals and other documents supporting or publicizing the technical effort. * Demonstrating creative ability through medium of patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers and articles.
Fire Protection Engineering and Technical Support Specialist Advisors should be able to: * Review fire suppression systems, fire alarm systems, architectural components, and overall building designs for new facilities as well as modifications to existing facilities. * Conduct Fire Modeling using CFAST and/or FDS to understand fire size for postulated fire scenarios. * Work with the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance group for fire protection equipment to ensure code compliance and establish compensatory measures when deficiencies are found. * Complete site surveys and identification of code issues, offering compliant solutions. * Perform interpretation and application of contract requirements relative to all aspects of fire protection and life safety. * Apply Fire Protection Codes and Standards including implementation of a Performance Based approach where applicable. * Prepare and present technical audits, reports, and exhibits to all levels of management including the Federal Government. * Multi-task, work with minimal supervision, follow written and oral instructions, show attention to detail and demonstrate problem-solving skills. * Quickly utilize SRNS systems and meet SRNS requirements with minimal supervisory guidance. * Plan, develop, implement, and administer a variety of broad or unique technical or programmatic functions in direct support of engineering, scientific, or computing related activities and functions. * Provide technical guidance, direction, oversight, and leadership to a functional work group(s), section or unit in a technical support capacity. * Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) or act in a predominantly lead capacity and may direct the work of others in a non-supervisory capacity. * Apply the highest technical experience in field of specialization or broad-based experience in multiple technical fields to resolve complex problems * Incorporate advanced technical practices and a variety of complex features directly or indirectly in support of engineering, computing, or scientific activities in the area, department, section, unit, or work group assigned. * Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise in a functional or technical area. * Receive assignments in the form of generally defined objectives and establish goals to meet objectives. * Exhibit complete competency at the highest technical or programmatic level as demonstrated by both personal expertise and the effective direction and leadership of assigned work group. * Enhances the technical capabilities of the group by implementing new and improved analyses and methodologies * Perform program/project analysis and interpretation. Evaluate the results of programs and prepare reports and recommendations based on these evaluations. Identify and recommend improvements where existing or established technology components and methodology are inadequate for solution. * Keep informed of the advancement of technology as applied through one's area of expertise. * Provide limited guidance to exempt employees and general guidance to nonexempt employees. Assists less experienced personnel with more difficult aspects of work and provides guidance to less senior employees to achieve assignments using established guidelines, procedures and policies. * Plans, prioritizes, and coordinates work for others in order to meet unit or work deadlines. Operate under tight deadlines and may be subject to extreme workloads. * Define specific problems based on general information from management or customers. Plan technical effort and coordinate activities with those in other divisions, departments, and sections in focus areas to solve problems. Communicate results and objectives verbally and in manuscript form to customers, colleagues
Provide advanced expertise and support to site operations to resolve very broad to abstract technical issues having division and/or site wide implications. Specific support provided will differ according to assignment, but will generally include directing, planning, developing, implementing, and administering technical engineering and operations related programs.
Ensure technical aspects of engineering, operations, or maintenance programs are in compliance with governing directives. Responsible for directing, planning, developing, implementing, and budgeting for various technical functions in support of the pre-conceptual design, construction, and start-up of process and testing facilities.
Interface and negotiate with vendors to resolve equipment, services, staffing, and technical related issues. Evaluate and analyze equipment, instruments, and procedures needed to upgrade operations programs. Evaluate, test, and procure new equipment and instruments in support of assigned operations programs. Ensure technical aspects of engineering and operations programs are in compliance with applicable laws, standards, and DOE Orders.
Serve on various committees regarding standardization of equipment, instrumentation, processes, and training in support of the company and DOE operations programs. Direct daily activity of other engineering and technical support specialists and serve as an area point of contact or subject matter expert for the most complex technical issues.
Assist less experienced personnel with more difficult aspects of work and provide guidance to less senior employees to achieve assignments using established guidelines, procedures, and policies.
Demonstrate cost and schedule awareness through timely completion of assigned tasks and projects.

Qualifications We Require High School Diploma, GED, or other equivalent State Credential
Other Qualifications Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance, if required.
Qualifications We Desire College degree in engineering, technical or mechanical area is preferred.
Understands and applies advanced knowledge of standard theories, concepts, principles, and techniques within Fire Protection Engineering.
Prior experience in DOE nuclear facilities is preferred.
Advanced knowledge of site work control procedures and practices for engineering, maintenance, and operations. Clear understanding of work hazards, safety programs, operating configuration and lockout/hold identification. Additional specialized knowledge required varies with the particular technical assignment. Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in certain technical areas, complex systems, or other facility or engineering areas.
