POSITION SUMMARY:

The Packaging Design Engineer is a member of the product development team responsible for the creation and execution of product packaging development across the consumer hardgoods product categories. Package Designer is responsible for drawing the customer's attention while relaying important product information to elevate the brand's impression to the customer. The packaging designer will coordinate the development process working with product designers, developers, vendors, and packaging suppliers in creating packaging designs from the concept stage to production for the assigned products.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Creates functional, creative packaging that engages the customer while adhering to the brand identity.

  • Collaborates and works closely with development team and marketing teams to ensure the brand's product are well represented through the product packaging.

  • Guides the designs process from beginning to end; conceptualize, design, and execute a prototype for attention-grabbing packaging materials, using design elements such as shape, color, graphics, and typography to create packaging that is functional, cost-effective, and appealing to customers.

  • Collaborates with creative teams, especially graphic designers, and copywriters, to create eye-catching designs.

  • Leads the design process for packaging materials for products, including brainstorming, sketching, and creating prototypes.

  • Partners with development teams to ensure all needs are met, brand standards, quality, regulatory, and costs.

  • Evaluates consumer and market trends for packaging materials.

  • Identifies suitable packaging materials and conducting feasibility studies.

  • Creates design and prototypes that are cost-effective, sustainable, and safe for customers.

  • Ensures packaging designs accurately represent each brand's ethos.

  • Presents designs using sketches and design software.

  • Develops prototypes and revisions based on feedback from development teams, vendors, and consumer safety groups.

  • Presents final designs to development team and managers.

  • ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred Degree: Bachelor's Degree in packaging engineering, industrial design, or graphics design

  • Years of experience: 3-5 years in creating sustainable consumer product packaging in hard goods

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:

  • Good design aesthetic, strong technical capability, and the ability to think conceptually.

  • Think dimensionally, bring a concept to life, and tell a story.

  • Present a strong portfolio with a variety of samples that demonstrates creativity, attention to detail and knowledge of market and consumer trends.

  • Familiarity with different packaging materials

  • Proficient use of creative tools, including Adobe Creative Suite, 3D software programs (Solidworks).

  • Organized and able to meet tight deadlines.

  • Strong problem-solving skills to quickly identify and rectify mistakes.

  • Strong interpersonal abilities and project management skills.

  • Proficient in use of MS Office suite

  • Attention to detail: visually and mechanically

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Less than 10% of time Domestic and International

  • Minimal travel required, less than 20 days per year.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regular computer work and sitting

  • Occasional walking, standing and lifting up to 50lbs

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:

  • Performs duties within scope of general company policies, procedures, and objectives. Analyzes problems and performs needs assessments. Uses judgment in adapting broad guidelines to achieve desired result. Regular exercise of independent judgment within accepted practices. Makes recommendations that affect policies, procedures, and practices.
