Position Title: Bilingual Instructional Assistant (Spanish) Department: EI/ECSE Location: Columbia County Service Center - St. Helens Reports To: EI/ECSE Coordinator Compensation: Support Services Salary Schedule, Range E FLSA Status: Non Exempt Bargaining Unit: Classified, OSEA FTE: 0.9375 / 37.5 hours per week NW REGIONAL ESD'S MISSION STATEMENT: In partnership with the communities we serve, Northwest Regional ESD improves student learning by providing equitable access to high quality services and support. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Special education instructional assistants work under the overall supervision of their building principal with direct supervision provided by special education teachers. They are employed to carry out program activities as planned and scheduled by licensed personnel, which includes implementing activities related to the student's IEP or IFSP in individual and small groups. The position monitors student safety and behavior in various settings. Duties can vary based on the age of the students served and the nature of the student(s) needs. A bilingual instructional assistant is defined as one who is fluent in both English and the primary language of the students identified as English language learners, and shall demonstrate cultural competency related to the students in the bilingual classes to which the bilingual instructional assistant is assigned. (Spanish) This job description describes in general terms the normal duties that the assistant will be expected to undertake. However, the job or duties described may vary or be amended from time to time without changing the level of responsibility associated with the job. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required 1. High School Diploma or equivalent required. 2. Fluent in English and Spanish 3. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in both English and Spanish 4. To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient with the following: email (MS Outlook), internet software and word processing (MS Word). 5. Ability to physically assist students with special needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, restraining, etc.) 6. Ability to lift students from a wheelchair to the floor and back and on and off of a changing table. 7. Certificates as determined by the District including a valid driver's license and CPR certificate as well as instruction in bloodborne pathogens. Other training as required by District. 8. Demonstrated ability to work effectively under the direction of others 9. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as part of a team ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Include the following. Performs some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Prepares instructional materials under direction of licensed educator 2. Provides instruction under the direction of licensed educator 3. Communicate orally, read, and write in English and Spanish to support learners in the classroom and their families when they participate in classroom activities 4. Translate notes from the teacher to the family regarding daily activities, and from the family to the teacher regarding the student 5. Demonstrate cultural competence related to students who are English language learners (Spanish speaking) and their families 6. Assists teacher in working with students to complete assignments 7. Assists teacher in grading and recording students' assignments; maintain and distribute student records as requested 8. Support students with emotional or behavior concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills 9. Takes and maintains data as needed and required by licensed teacher 10. Assists students with toileting needs as directed 11. Maintains students' safety and monitors appropriate behavior at recess, in class and during bus loading and unloading. Notes discipline issues and completes proper paperwork for reporting such incidents 12. Participates in restraint training as required 13. Attend staff and team meetings 14. Maintains confidentiality 15. Be proactive in matters related to health and safety 16. Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality 17. Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with staff and customers at all organizational levels 18.
