Sr. Director, SOM Business Analytics
Reporting dually to the School of Medicine (SOM) Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and the Executive Director of the SOM Financial Transformation Program, we are seeking a Sr. Director of SOM Business Analytics who is a core member of the SOM leadership team and provides business process and analytics leadership related to financial forecasting, funds flow, workforce planning, and the general financial and operational reporting needs of the SOM. This role leads the creation of financial reports, dashboards and other analyses that aid the multi-year financial planning of the SOM. The candidate should have strong financial experience in academic medical centers similar to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Health System. The Senior Director will also work closely with Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Health System finance and data analytics counterparts. The Senior Director will help design positions and recruit for an analytics and decision support team.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for developing strategies for execution and integration of tools, both vendor and internally developed solutions, to support mission-based management of the SOM including but not limited to financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, faculty and staff workforce management, expense management, clinical data integration, research productivity, etc.
  • Develops and implements strategic and tactical tools and resources to support financial decision-making for the SOM. Leverages existing Hopkins technologies and tools to automate processes.
  • Leads and supports the financial integration of data for SOM and serves as subject matter expert in collecting, organizing, and analyzing critical data by creating, managing, and continuously improving models that allow leadership to look at data across our business entities and tripartite mission (research, education, and patient service).
  • Leads enhancements of existing reporting processes and the current suite of reports across the School of Medicine to improve operational efficiency.
  • Supports the SOM CFO, SOM Executive Director and the SOM Finance leadership in financial planning and analysis, including multi-year financial planning, workforce planning, and budget processes.
  • Develops tools and infrastructure necessary to efficiently provide comprehensive monthly and quarterly financial reporting to Senior Leadership using query tools and SOM/University reporting systems. Develops, validates, distributes, and presents reports to appropriate stakeholders, including executives, as needed.
  • Provides financial analytics support for new initiatives or strategic financial matters; helps frame options, recommendations, and considerations; creates and presents ad-hoc reports as needed.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of Tableau, SQL, PowerBI, Excel and the entire Microsoft Office suite.
  • Self-starter, well organized, flexible, and able to simultaneously manage multiple, challenging projects or responsibilities in a fast-paced work setting with shifting priorities and deadlines.
  • Should be naturally curious and skilled in exploring and learning new technologies and reporting tools.
  • Proven ability to quickly assimilate new technology and applications required.
  • Collaborative working style with excellent problem-solving and presentation skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with people at all levels of the organization.
  • Critical thinking, communications, and data analysis skills are a must; the ability to work at the detail level and synthesize and present complex information across various stakeholders.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, judgment, discretion, and confidentiality in all aspects of work.


Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Analytics, Business or a related field is required.
    • Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible finance or relevant experience required, preferably in a medical school or academic medical center.
    • Strong knowledge of business analytics concepts and methodologies, industry standards and best practices.
    • Extensive experience with leveraging financial systems and database tools (e.g. PowerBI, SAP, SQL, Tableau) to support complex financial planning, budgeting and reporting.
    • Supervisory experience.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Masters Degree, preferably an advanced degree in analytics or directly relevant field.

    JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
