Your Role With Us:

The Technical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the smooth and timely flow of collecting and /or processing of patient specimens from multiple clinical disciplines. Additionally, the Technical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for the accurate performance and reporting of waived and moderately complex laboratory tests, use of controls to assure accuracy of test results and the exercise of judgment in the case of questionable or abnormal results.

Core Functions:

  • Assists in the development of policies, procedures, processes, performance improvement and quality assurance in accordance with accreditation requirements.
  • Effectively prioritizes work so that efficiency is optimal and turnaround time expectations are continually met. Flexibility in tasks and bench assignments exhibited as workload requires.
  • Resolves technical problems without delay. Demonstrates good working knowledge of web based programs.
  • Performs specimen collection to obtain appropriate samples from patients for the tests ordered as stated in the Phlebotomy procedure and the Salem Health Directory of Service
  • Collections include: venous blood, capillary blood, arterial blood, swab, and breath tests
  • Process and perform EKGs on patients with the ability to troubleshoot inadequate reads, and recognize critical EKG results.
  • Appropriately handle lab specimens in a timely and accurate manner
  • Participates in available continuing education programs to maintain and improve professional skills. Which includes obtaining a minimum of 5 CEU's annually.

    Background/Expertise:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • One (1) year's laboratory training/experience in a clinical laboratory or minimum of 3 quarters of college level course work that includes laboratory activities.
    • Familiarity with medical terminology is considered a strong asset in this position.
    • Prior experience with Laboratory Information Systems and Hospital Information Systems is highly desirable.
    Plusses:
    • Clinical rotation at Salem Hospital
    • Minimum of (1) year of related experience in either a clinical, medical office, or research setting.
    • Experience in team process, quality management, and problem solving.
    • Experience with a Laboratory Information System.
