The Project Engineer (II) is a critical role responsible for supporting the development and installation of energy conservation measures and renewable energy at large-scale public sector customers. The right person will be working in a fast-paced, team-based environment., at the direction of the Project Manager as well as their supervisor. Responsibilities in this role include the design of Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Measures, performing site audits, specifying equipment, and completing savings calculations to support projects in development and construction. Projects include a combination of energy efficiency measures and renewable generation installations, to help local cities, schools, and counties become more sustainable, save money, and improve services to their end-users and the expectation is that one to several projects are supported from early development through post-construction. In this role, you will be working in a team-based environment, at the direction of the Project Manager as well as their supervisor.

This position can sit in Oakland, CA or San Jose, CA and will report to the Director of Project Management.

What you'll do:



  • Oversee the entire technical design of energy-related customer improvements including such as solar PV, energy storage, microgrids, utility MV mitigations, and SCADA upgrades
  • Apply knowledge of HVAC and Controls, including modeling software
  • Analyze utility data to verify existing customer loads, consider rate change options and calculate energy and water cost savings
  • Perform renewable energy designs, including solar PV and energy storage system site surveys and understand metering and measurement tools and data
  • Evaluate various types and locations of renewable energy systems
  • Perform energy conservation measure analysis including comparison of technologies, savings calculations, scopes of work and contractor bid costs for eMobility, HVAC, controls, lighting and water measures, using tools such as eQuest, Trane Trace, Energy Pro and Excel spreadsheets, including bin simulations
  • Calculate potential solar generation quantities of various scenarios using PVSyst modeling, Helioscope and Energy Toolbase tools
  • Prepare Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Measures scopes and specifications for subcontractor Request for Proposals
  • Prepare utility and other incentive program applications, permit packages and customer submittals
  • Assist the Project and Construction Managers on job walks, bid evaluations, contractor negotiations, and during construction meetings
  • Assist with obtaining third-party quotes and subcontractor bids for all scopes, answers third-party questions, and assists with analyzing bids with Project Manager
  • Accurately estimates measure costs to anticipate total project costs
  • Communicate with authority-having-jurisdiction officials to obtain construction permits
  • Prior projects' experience with DSA and OSHPD is a plus
  • Assist during the construction phase of the project by reviewing submittals, change orders, RFI's, and make recommendations to the Project Manager
  • Superior knowledge with Procore Construction Management software is a plus
  • Carry out other duties as assigned

What you bring:



  • Bachelor's Degree with a preferred focus on an electrical engineering discipline or equivalent, required
  • A minimum of two (2) years' work experience, with a preference for additional training
  • Working knowledge of utility rate schedules including TOU and demand charges structures
  • Superior knowledge of eMobility and battery storage systems
  • Previous experience with solar photovoltaic systems, including the ability to identify different systems and equipment, identify potential energy savings measures, and quantify the potential energy savings and costs
  • Understanding of metering and measurement tools for data provided
  • Competency in computer modeling software programs, such as PVSyst or Helioscope, and apply them in preparing savings calculations and customer deliverables
  • Strong knowledge of national and California electric codes as it applies to renewables sections
  • Capability to handling multiple projects of moderate complexity at one time
  • Creativity in solving problems where solutions are not clear
  • Calculate potential solar generation quantities of various scenarios using the PVSyst modeling and Energy Toolbase tools
  • A proficiency in Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Measures scopes and specifications for subcontractor Request for Proposals
  • Knowledge of utility and other incentive program applications, permit packages and customer submittals
  • Ability to assist the Project and Construction Managers on job walks, bid evaluations, contractor negotiations, and during construction meetings
  • Capability during the construction phase of the project to assist by reviewing submittals, change orders, and RFI's, and make recommendations to the Project Manager
  • Carry out other duties as assigned
  • A proficiency in computer modeling/simulation of building operation to calibrate energy consumption to utility bill data
  • Capability to work on AutoCAD to design diagrams and clear layouts for customer and contractors.
  • Ability to mentor/advise other engineers and train them on areas of expertise
  • Excellent communication skills with colleagues and customers
  • Self-starter to get things done with a positive attitude
  • Previous onsite commissioning of electrical systems knowledge

  • Salary Range: $61,455-$156,650 USD, annually
  • Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors


  • In addition to salary, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan
