Position Summary
The Assistant Food Safety and Preservation Coordinator will support the work of the director of the National Center for Home Food Preservation ( NCHFP), Dr. Carla Schwan, in advancing research in food safety and preservation, answering questions from general public, content development, and training for Extension education programs in home food preservation across the state of Georgia. In collaboration with Dr. Schwan, the candidate of choice will support publication content development, review, and revisions to reflect current scientific evidence and standards of practice in food safety and preservation. The individual will also oversee activities such as project implementation, data collection, data management, basic data analysis, report writing and contribution to scientific publications, presentations, and reports. The employee will be involved in training and direct education of Extension faculty and staff and the public. This position involves food safety and home food preservation expertise, excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently, in teams, and with a variety of audiences, such as extension agents, academics, the public, students and interns.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Able to comprehend and translate scientific literature on food safety and preservation into educational materials comprehendible by consumers and professionals at a variety of educational levels.
  • Able to work independently on a Biosafety level 1 laboratory and under supervision in a Biosafety level 2 laboratory.
  • Able to perform laboratory activities, including, but not limited, to water activity, pH, Brix, aerobic plate count, streaking and isolation of bacteria.
  • Able to teach or assist with teaching activities related to ServSafe, food safety and preservation.
  • Able to manage program data and follow technical reporting requirements.
  • Basic understanding of common statistical software and tests for analyzing data is preferred.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment involving multi-tasking.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and public speaking skills.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Able to work with a wide variety of colleagues and audiences including academic colleagues, medical professionals, practitioners, Extension agents, graduate and undergraduate students and the public.
  • Be detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Power Point, and Excel.
