Position Summary |
This is a professional and research position involving both lab management and independent research focusing on chemical ecology of plant-insect interactions. The work involves independent planning, organizing, and directing day-today management of an academic research laboratory and includes both field and laboratory research. Lab research is heavily analytical, utilizing gas chromatorgraphy mass spectrometery and the resulting data, and involves analytical chemistry experience, detailed record keeping, and the reporting of results for publication. |
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
- Experience working with Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry and Liquid Chromatography equipment and data.
- Chemistry wet lab experience including analytical chemistry coursework at graduate or undergraduate level, or similar experience.
- Ability to maintain and troubleshoot GCMS machinery.
- Experience writing technical and scientific publications.
- An understanding of the ecology of pollination mutualisms.

Laboratory management:
- Individual will be responsible for set-up and maintenance of laboratory equipment, including GCMS and GC-FID.
- Coordinate equipment usage, maintain sample databases, and stock office and lab supplies including handling and maintaining a large supply of chemical standards.
- Responsible for generating lab protocols and maintaining a general lab manual.

Manage project involving chemical trait evolution across Zamia cycads:
- Individual will spearhead an existing project on chemical trait evolution across Zamia cycads as it relates to the brood site pollination mutualism.
- The main goals of the project include the identification of plant compounds and analysis of plant volatiles in an evolutionary framework as it correlates with plant, pollinator and herbivore phylogenies.
- Individual is expected to be able to summaries data and present findings.
- This project will included fieldwork and travel, potentially international.

Generate and analyze GCMS and LCMS data:
- Individual is expected to generate GCMS and LCMS data for all projects in the lab, generate chemical dilutions using analytical chemistry, and maintain a large collection of chemical standards.
- They will collect and maintain data as well as perform MS and statistical analysis.
- Individual must be able to troubleshoot a GCMS.

Train students in laboratory methods including GCMS methods and data analysis:
- Individual is responsible for being the lab point person on all things GCMS being able to train lab members on proper machine usage, technique, and analysis as well as provide a basic background of gas chromatography methodology.

Duties/Responsibilities |
Contribute writing to publications, grant applications, and laboratory protocols:
- Individual is expected to contribute to scientific and technical writings for use in scientific publications with which they are involved and laboratory protocols. This will include any necessary literature review.
- They will be included in authorship of resulting publications in accordance with their contributions (first authorship is encouraged).
- They may contribute to grant applications that include projects that they may work on and are encouraged to generate novel ideas of interest to themselves and the lab.
