Job Summary The Risk Analyst is responsible for supporting the daily operations of healthcare risk management activities for the UCSF employees at ZSFG, which support the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization and promotes high-quality patient care, compliance with applicable hospital policies, patient safety, and patient and family services and care.
The Risk Analyst works independently and in collaboration with the Assistant Risk Manager, other hospital staff and physician leaders. A crucial part of the incumbent's job is the development and maintenance of collaborative relationships across the institution. The Incumbent contributes and participates in providing risk advice in a variety of areas, including consent, mandatory reporting, patient/family/visitor behavior, threat management, medication management, adverse event management, patient complaints and grievances, Medical and Nursing Board complaints, privacy and confidentiality, surgical complications, disclosure of adverse events, discharge and discontinuation of care, elopement and AMA, media requests, policies and procedure, to name a few. In consultation with the Assistant Risk Manager, the incumbent will guide physicians to reduce the risk of harm to patients by assisting the Assistant Risk Manager in the development of retrospective reviews following an adverse event or claim.
The Risk Analyst performs detailed technical and risk data analysis, chart review and summary, data collection and data entry into and extraction of data and reports from the UC System Wide Claims Management data base (iVOS), Risk Management Office databases and UC System Wide Claim Analysis data base (CRICO).
The Risk Analyst identifies potential problems with the care related to adverse events and liability claims. The Risk Analyst assists with tracking and developing reports related to the Risk Management functions at ZSFG. The incumbent will partner with the Assistant Risk Manager for the timely submission of PINS and helps facilitate investigations by Sedwick.
The Risk Analyst works independently and in collaboration with the Assistant Risk Manager, outside counsel, and Sedgwick claims representatives on professional liability claims to assist with preparation of responses to discovery requests. The Risk Analyst is responsible for assisting the Assistant Risk Manager, with oversight of the professional liability program for UCSF employees at ZSFG, including all ambulatory practices, and at other UCSF/ZSFG affiliated clinics and institutions.
The incumbent fully manages subpoenas received by UCSF at ZSFG Risk Management related to depositions of UCSF physicians who provide services at ZSFG. Department Description The primary function of the UCSF at ZSFG Risk Management Unit is to minimize financial exposure to the UCSF School of Medicine, UCSF at ZSFG Clinical Practice Group and UCSF affiliates arising from professional liability matters. The UCSF at ZSFG Risk Management department unit serves as a resource to all UCSF at ZSFG Trauma Center staff/employees regarding risk management issues.
The School of Medicine Vice Dean's Office at ZSFG supports the clinical, teaching and research activities of the UCSF faculty, residents, students and staff at ZSFG that are intended, in partnership with the administration of DPH, to support both missions of UCSF and ZSFG.
Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) has been a training hospital for UCSF since it opened in 1872. The Affiliation Agreement between the UCSF School of Medicine and the City/County of San Francisco includes providing all of the professional medical staff at ZSFG across approximately 40 different service lines. Currently, there are over 990 active and courtesy UCSF faculty working at ZSFG. UCSF also operates undergraduate and postgraduate medical training programs at ZSFG. More than 900 UCSF residents and 350 medical students rotate at ZSFG each year. There are approximately 450 clinical staff and approximately 500 administrative and research staff based at ZSFG.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Minimum 3 years directly relevant experience
- Strong technical skills to analyze and identify potential risks. Ability to produce high quality work and keep commitments. Productive in work volume, speed, quality and consistency
- Proven ability to manage a project through to completion while performing a wide variety of tasks, adapting to changing priorities, deadlines and directions
- Interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with peers, physicians, multidisciplinary team members, and management
- Strong skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Proven ability to address problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process
- Verbal and written communication skills to explain technical risk management concepts and articulate reasoning behind own opinions
- Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Comprehensive knowledge of organization's risk management application programs to teach others
Preferred Qualifications
- Paralegal certificate
- Thorough knowledge of healthcare risk management practices, claims administration, and data analysis skills. Applies knowledge to assess, monitor, investigate, report
- Knowledge of risk management, medical center, and UC policies and processes. Thorough knowledge of relevant risk management federal, state, and local laws and regulations to identify potential compliance risks, clinical and operational implications
- Strong teaching skills. Ability to break down complex concepts in an understandable way
- Thorough knowledge of data management and documentation methods used in risk management
