United States, California, El Segundo
January 04, 2024

The Aerospace Corporation is the trusted partner to the nation's space programs, solving the hardest problems and providing unmatched technical expertise. As the operator of a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), we are broadly engaged across all aspects of space- delivering innovative solutions that span satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil and commercial customers. When you join our team, you'll be part of a special collection of problem solvers, thought leaders, and innovators. Join us and take your place in space.

At Aerospace, we are committed to providing an inclusive and diverse workplace for all employees to share in our common passion and aspiration - to carry out a mission much bigger than ourselves.

The Electronics and Sensors Division (ESD) is a world-class engineering and scientific leader in electronics and remote sensing systems. The Digital and Integrated Circuit Electronics Department (DICED) resides within ESD and supports the design, modeling, simulation, verification, analysis, and test for microelectronics and digital electronic boards, boxes, subsystems, and systems for civil, commercial, and national space systems. Our expertise in digital electronics, combined with sophisticated in-house laboratories, rapid prototyping, industry-standard modeling and simulation capabilities, enables DICED to deliver innovative solutions to national space systems and civil customers.

What You'll Be Doing

In this position you will work with our circuit design team and support our customers to optimize the design and development of digital and mixed-signal circuits and systems. Tasks will include design, analysis, modeling, simulation, and characterization of high-speed digital and mixed-signal circuits.

  • Perform requirements development, electrical design, system integration, verification & validation, and risk assessments for space electronic systems
  • Assess space flight worthiness of board/unit designs
  • Develop and execute analysis and test plans to validate signal and interface integrity
  • Leverage the use of state-of-the-art high-speed digital and microelectronic technology and design best practices
  • Perform Worst Case Circuit Analysis (WCCA) and Assessment of Critical Timing Relationships (WCTA) on Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) or Printed-Wired Board (PWB) designs
  • Lead failure investigation processes
  • Work directly with program office customers as the digital electronics expert to define scope of tasking and effectively communicate results of tasking
  • Provide written reports on electronic design project status and results, brief the customers and management on project status/results, and provide end of week reports
  • Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned as needed

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in electrical engineering or another related field
  • At least eight years of experience since obtaining a bachelor's degree
  • Experience with the full design and development cycle of space flight high-speed digital and mixed-signal systems: from concept and requirements definition to on-orbit operation: board/unit/sub-system/system level
  • Solid background on transmission line theory and in-depth knowledge of electromagnetics, PCB layout, and package layout techniques
  • Familiarity with signal integrity and circuit simulation and analysis tools such as Hyperlynx and PSPICE
  • Experience with lab measurements using oscilloscopes, TDRs, VNAs, and spectrum analyzers
  • Understanding of standard digital circuit interface operation(CMOS, RS-422, LVDS, and ASIC/FPGA).
  • Self-motivated, teamwork, and good communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, concurrent design and analysis projects
  • Ability to document projects in technical reports, presentations/briefs, and report findings to the customer and Aerospace management
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site as necessary for in-person lab or classified work
  • Willing to travel domestically up to 25%
  • Position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance that is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

  • Eight or more yearsof increasingly responsible professional engineering/scientific experience since obtaining a bachelor's degree, including experience in high-speed digital design, development, and implementation
  • Demonstrated ability to manage concurrent digital, integrated circuit, and mixed-signal electronics projects
  • Building and leading teams associated with digital hardware design and/or assessments
  • Experience designing FPGA/ASICs with a hardware description language such as VHDL, Verilog, and/or System Verilog
  • Familiarity of board-level and component-level radiation testing and space radiation effects
  • Firm understanding of transmission line theory and electromagnetic field concepts
  • Demonstrated ability to use signal integrity simulation and analysis tools
  • Demonstrated understanding of high-speed digital communications, space payload electronics and subsystems, command and data handling (C&DH) systems, and digital signal processing
  • Experience with troubleshooting and root cause analysis of digital circuits and subsystems
  • Current Secret or Top-Secret clearance with SSBI or periodic reinvestigation completed within the last five years that resulted in clearance granted or maintained
