Unistrut Construction, a part of Atkore, is a Chicago based specialty steel contractor with approximately 250 employees and branches in major cities across the United States. We specialize in Healthcare and High-tech Datacom construction work and are licensed nationwide with expertise in design, engineering, fabrication, and installation services. Our goal is to create value for our customers and stakeholders by providing innovative differentiated solutions to the construction market. We support small "book and turn" renovation work as well as large complex multimillion dollar multiyear projects. Our primary customers in these segments are sophisticated larger General Contractors serving the renovation and new construction segments building marque or highly visible projects across the region.

Who we are looking for:

We are currently seeking a Senior Estimating Manager to lead our efforts to bid and secure work supporting our growth objectives. This key position will be working from our headquarters in Addison, IL. leading and supporting a team of (8) Eight locally and from our regional offices across the US. This leader works closely with our commercial and project management teams to identify, qualify, bid and ultimately secure work in the Healthcare, Data Center and Complex Commercial Construction markets from repeat customers delivering Unistrut Construction's value proposition of design fabrication and installation of complex mechanical support systems.

A successful candidate must have excellent leadership skills and a history of building and developing cross functional teams. This individual must be able to set and achieve long term goals and objectives, direct the work and activities of others to achieve tactical objectives and be willing to roll up their sleeves to work on the largest projects with the leadership team directly. They will develop and refine our approach, improving our odds of winning. This candidate posies highly analytical skill set needed to develop and implement new strategies delivering continuous improvement to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the department and be willing to work cross functionally supporting team members in their efforts to drive sales and grow the business.

What you'll do:



  • Develop and lead a team of (8) eight, balancing workload with the demands of the business.
  • Lead our estimating department in continuous improvement through review and analysis of our wins and losses to better win rates, expand margins and supporting growth.
  • Review opportunities and develop bid strategies.
  • Prepare estimates and written quotes based on customer provided drawings/specifications that meet project requirements regarding materials, labor and schedule.
  • Assist the Project Managers in developing change orders.
  • Manage multiple bid/estimate projects at one time.
  • Assist our commercial team in the development and delivery of proposals.
  • Support the broader leadership team developing improvements in gross margin attained on construction projects using lean tools and concepts.
  • Lead and participate in coordination meetings with all internal and external team members. Make necessary decisions on issues that arise.
  • Monitor the pre-construction team's schedule and quality control process. Initiate appropriate action, if necessary to balance work load and ensure we are prioritizing critical must win opportunities.
  • Review the teams work for accuracy. Assess risks relative to subcontractor pricing, schedules, and bonding requirements.
  • Responsible for tracking performance, coaching, training needs, and motivating direct reports and regional group.



What you'll bring:



  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or other related functional areas
  • A minimum 5 years of experience in construction management or related fields, including construction inspection, estimating, scheduling, and project controls.
  • Approximately 10% Travel
  • Proficiency with CAD, BiM, Revit suite of design software, Procore, Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint. Ability to quickly learn internal software and programs (ECMS, Salesforce,)

    Within 3 months, you'll:



    • Complete the Atkore immersion program and understand our Strategic Deployment Process, Continuous improvement, Lean Daily Management and Standard work, what we call the Atkore Business System ABS
    • Understand the full scope of the position and have formed initial thinking on improvement priorities;
    • Develop relationships with Unistrut Construction stakeholders that help support our Top-Level Strategic Priorities.
    • Gain an understanding of our go to market strategies and the tools to effectively support our goals and initiatives.
    • Begin learning our product, services, and key customer drivers to leverage our value proposition for each vertical market.


    Within 6-months, you'll:



    • Refine our commercial targets developing relationships with top General Contractors (GCs) and end users in each market we support.
    • Work with the Director of Sales to develop to develop and implement strategies to drive revenue for projects in Healthcare, Data Centers, and Complex Commercial construction verticals. Assist in leveraging online platforms to search, locate, and qualify projects that align with our core competencies.
    • Lead and contribute to gather key project scope requirements by reading specs, interpreting drawings,.
    • Become proficient at Sales Force, manage team members and their ability to effectively utilize the tool to its fullest.
    • Establish strong relationships with our RSMs, PMs, and Estimating Team.
    • Articulate who we are, what we do, and confidently deliver our value prop to a customer.


    Within 12-months, you'll:



    • Demonstrate stand-alone proficiency by conducting 1:1 review (s) with individual team members.
    • Lead scope reviews on select projects and make recommendations to support customer needs.
    • Consistently communicate with Unistrut Construction RSMs/PMs and coordinate requirements for projects in their territory. Share information on market trends and overall business conditions.
    • Leverage strengths to improve our project conversation rate and take market share from our competition.
