Lewis Roca seeks an experienced legal professional to join our Loss Prevention team as Conflicts Counsel. This position works with the firm's General Counsel and Senior Conflicts & Loss Prevention Counsel on loss prevention and conflicts resolution activities for the firm. Conflicts Counsel is responsible for reviewing and analyzing potential conflicts for new business, lateral attorney and legal staff hires and resolving and documenting conflicts resolution under the supervision of the General Counsel and Senior Conflicts and Loss Prevention Counsel and may assist with other loss prevention programs, ethics training, and polices as required. A Juris Doctorate is required; Admission to the bar in the relevant jurisdiction (AZ, CO, NV) is required within six months of hire if not currently admitted. Phoenix area candidates are preferred, but the successful candidate could find a home in our Arizona, Colorado or Nevada offices. A hybrid work arrangement may be available after training and onboarding in the firm's Phoenix office.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Provide concise and complete evaluations of potential conflict issues and identify recognized approaches for resolution.
  • Work with General Counsel and Senior Conflicts and Loss Prevention Counsel to develop internal conflicts policies and processes for drafting ethics screens and resolution of potential conflicts associated with lateral lawyers and legal staff.
  • Work with the Director of Records Management and New Business Intake to ensure ethical administration of the conflict screening process and outcomes.
  • Work with General Counsel, Senior Conflicts and Loss Prevention Counsel and Director of Records Management and New Business Intake to develop internal orientation and training programs.
  • Review, verify, and analyze new business conflict reports and prepare a summary of potential conflicts identified and recommend appropriate responsive action.
  • Assist the involved attorneys with assessing the nature of the potential conflict and whether such conflict may be waived. Draft and provide conflicts waiver requests in consultation with General Counsel and Senior Conflicts and Loss Prevention Counsel.
  • Partner with Marketing, Practice Group Leaders and firm management on Requests for Proposals and contract renewals.
  • Review and analyze lateral and legal staff prior work history conflicts reports. Document conflict resolution for lateral legal hires and other employees as needed. Supervise implementation of ethical walls for incoming hires when deemed appropriate.


Education and Experience:


  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, must be admitted to practice law in one of our states (AZ, CO, NV) or become admitted within 6 months of hire; must not have a disciplinary record with the bar for any state or clearly explain the circumstances in the cover letter
  • One year of experience in a law firm performing similar conflict analyst responsibilities OR three years experience in a law firm or a multiple-lawyer corporate legal department
  • Demonstrated ability to both independently plan and coordinate work with others to bring projects to successful completion.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, knowledge of and ability to use technology to perform responsibilities, such as electronic document filing programs, online legal research services (e.g., Lexis, Westlaw), searchable conflicts databases (e.g. Elite), ethical wall builder databases, finance databases (e.g., Elite), and other research or reporting tools.
  • Pro-active self-starter; demonstrated ability to see and remain mindful of the big picture without losing sight of details
  • Ability to research specific jurisdiction rules as they relate to conflict of interest issues.
  • Knowledge of the Rules of Professional Responsibility.
  • Ability to thoroughly research a potential conflict and utilize deductive reasoning and analytical skills to assimilate the information gathered to draw appropriate conclusions.
  • Strong client service skills and time management practices.
  • Proven organizational skills, ability to set priorities and multi-task while meeting strict deadlines.
  • A risk management mindset with a keen attention to detail. Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Effective communication interpersonal skills in varied settings and circumstances


Salary range: $100,000 - $130,000
Compensation can vary based on qualifications and experience.
