The Controller reports to the Senior Vice President, Finance. The Controller plays a lead role in financial planning, and oversees the following functional areas: accounts payable, payroll, banking/treasury affairs, general accounting, accounts receivable, fixed assets, budgeting, and financial statement preparation. The Controller also ensures a smooth external audit is conducted. This position ensures the highest integrity of the financial records of the Agency, its affiliates, and partnerships in conformity with best practices and US GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides strategic financial partnership and collaborates with cross-functional partners to deliver accurate and timely financial information along with business insights and recommendations.
- Aligns and partners with functional leads to understand and deliver goals (annual / periodic), and develops annual planning and monitoring of financial forecasts.
- Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements (federal, state, local).
- Maintains internal control and safeguards for recording of revenue, expenses, and cash handling, as well as program budgets.
- Coordinates all audit activity, especially the external audit and preparing our financial statements.
- Consistently analyzes accounting data and presents financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicates monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitors progress and changes and keeps senior leadership abreast of the Agency’s financial status.
- Leads the annual budgeting and planning process and presents final budget to Chiefs and Board. Administers and reviews all financial plans and compares to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
- Supports the SVP/CFO in order to deliver on all requests by the Board’s audit and finance committees. Attends such committee and Board meetings on a regular basis.
- Ensures financial expenditures are consistently aligned with department and program budgets throughout the funding period. Collates financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
- Manages organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program vice presidents; continuously collaborates with program vice presidents to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establishes finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
- Manages and tracks the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MARGINAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- May be required to work a flexible schedule.
EDUCATION
- CPA or Bachelor’s degree, or Master’s degree in Accounting required.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
- Non-profit accounting experience highly preferred.
- Solid experience coordinating external audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
- Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
- Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.
