Description
We are hiring a Finishing Engineer to lead new coating development, manufacturing support, technical systems innovation and more!
What you will be doing:
New Coating development: You will be responsible for exploring new materials and processes for coating development. Your duties will include project administration for new coating development. You will coordinate testing activities for qualification purposes.
Manufacturing support: You will provide support for the quality system in the manufacturing process. Ensuring compliance with environmental quality regulations will be part of your responsibilities. You will contribute to cost reduction, efficiency improvement, and refinish reduction efforts. Your role will involve developing and installing equipment for manufacturing purposes. You will implement new materials into the manufacturing process .
You will be responsible for daily troubleshooting in the manufacturing process.
Technical Systems development and revision:
You will develop and revise specifications for technical systems.
Mastery of both physical and electronic systems will be necessary.
Your responsibilities will include maintaining quality documentation, such as Non-Conforming Material Reports (NCSW) and Corrective Action Requests (CSW).
You will be responsible for documenting the manufacturing processes.
Methodology development and administration:
You will develop and enhance test methods for various purposes.
Specialized Testing:
You will conduct specialized testing as required.
Information and Training:
You will provide information and training to stakeholders as necessary.
Your future team:
As part of the Finish Engineering Team you will work with cross functional teams of other staff, technical support, manufacturing groups, Suppliers, and possibly Dealer / Customers
Who You Are:
Preferred Skills and Competencies
  • Ability to perform and develop mathematical calculations using Engineering principles.
  • Requires interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to effectively transfer knowledge to others, including audiences of both technical and non-technical, some levels of management, and production employees.
  • Requires presentation skills to achieve acceptance of ideas.
  • Understanding of various coating types, their characteristics, principles of formulation, manufacture, and application. The ability to apply that knowledge to coordination of coatings, suppliers and production trouble-shooting and support.
  • Superior color vision preferred, knowledge of visual and instrumental color measurement principles and techniques and the ability to apply to both in-lab and in plant situations.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of the spectrum of physical testing for various coatings.
  • Understanding of instrument calibration and verification principles and the ability to apply that knowledge to both in lab and in plant situations.
  • Understanding of scientific method, experimental control, and design of experiments.
  • Understanding of production finishing, factors that affect paint application, material utilization, product quality, etc.
  • Application ability with personal computers.
  • Understanding of quality system requirements and the ability to apply them to in lab and in plant situations.
  • Requires analytical and problem solving skills in a variety of engineering and/or scientific procedures.
Required Skills and Competencies
  • Four-year Engineering or Technical degree with 1 - 5 years of related experience is preferred.
  • Two-year technical degree / certification with 6-10 years of experience in the Associate Finishing Engineer or equivalent position, or a High School diploma with a minimum of 10 years in the Associate Finishing
  • Engineer or equivalent position may be considered equivalencies
  • Must be able to work in a normal office / lab environment.
  • Must be willing to be exposed to some paint and solvent materials during testing, manufacturing support.
  • Must be willing to be exposed to production paint shop and mix room environments. Safety awareness and precautions must be strictly adhered to.
  • Travel will be required within the GR / Kentwood facilities and offices, Suppliers facilities, and Steelcase subsidiaries.
