Job Summary

The assistant director of leadership annual giving is a frontline fundraiser who is responsible for growing the donor pipeline, soliciting gifts, and raising money for UCSF priority areas. The position is a vital member of the annual and special giving (ASG) team. They will use their skills as a volunteer manager and frontline fundraiser to work with volunteer leaders, reunion classes, and leadership prospects to craft highly personalized and targeted fundraising campaigns. They will work with a portfolio of more than 800 alumni who are currently not managed by a relationship manager and who have given $1,000 to $50,000 in the last 5 years.

UCSF hosts an annual Alumni Weekend every spring, a large component of which comprises of reunion celebrations for UCSF's five schools; a large portion of the assistant director's work portfolio will include building relationships with key volunteer stakeholders and crafting targeted appeals leveraging the event. Historically, reunion giving from the School of Medicine has raised $500k+ and part of the assistant director's role will be to collaborate on rethinking reunion philanthropy for a new generation of alumni and expand the program to include our other schools.

The assistant director will manage a dynamic portfolio primarily consisting of reunion celebrants, alumni association board members and other volunteer leaders, and through 1:1 conversations turn these engaged alumni into future philanthropic leaders. This role is central to broader pipeline building strategies within annual giving and UDAR. Working under the guidance of the director of alumni annual giving, the assistant director will partner with other ASG members to execute fundraising campaigns utilizing direct mail, 1:1 conversations with donors, email, texting, and crowdfunding platforms. These fundraising campaigns include, but are not limited to: annual reunion class campaigns, affinity based campaigns on Giving Tuesday, graduating class gifts, and other targeted projects as arise. The assistant director will work closely with partners across UDAR and demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining fundraising and engagement solutions. The position is expected to raise gift dollar amounts as established at each fundraiser specialization.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The UCSF Foundation and the Office of University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) are responsible for fostering and strengthening the campus outreach efforts to UCSF constituents and for garnering private support for the campus and the Medical Center. In raising private support, UDAR identifies, qualifies, solicits and stewards donors for the schools, medical centers, departments and programs on campus; accepts and administers all private gifts to the university through The Regents or the UCSF Foundation; and manages all alumni relations activities, campus support group activities and campus events. The UDAR office staffs the UCSF Foundation. The office is also responsible for the design and implementation of fundraising campaigns for UCSF.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • At least three years' experience working in fundraising or related roles
  • Thorough working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques
  • Thorough working knowledge of the UCSF enterprise - its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements, and infrastructure
  • Strong knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills, including skills in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification / avoidance / resolution, and project management skills
  • Strong skills in maintaining confidentiality
