Department Description

The Better Lab is a multi-disciplinary research and design lab based out of the Department of Surgery at ZSFG that uses a mixed method approach to addressing healthcare challenges. We merge principles of human-centered design and quality improvement to identify, implement and evaluate interventions that can be successful in solving some of the most pressing issues facing our general surgery and trauma patients at ZSFG. We take a human-centered design approach, starting with the users -- patients, physicians, caregivers and healthcare professionals to understand the context of their everyday lives as we work together to identify major pain points facing surgical care at ZSFG, develop solutions and iterate quickly to see what works. The Better Lab's current projects focus on generating improvements within the Department of Surgery. Projects include: improving the experience and efficiency of daily trauma rounds; improving patient attendance for elective general surgery in 3M and overall user experience in clinic; and improving the experience and efficiency of high level trauma activations.
