Boiler Operator/Maintenance Technician

Saint Vincent College currently has an opening for a Boiler Operator/Maintenance Technician. This is a full-time position with benefits. The Boiler Operator/Maintenance Technician will be responsible for proper operation and maintenance of the central heating plant, including boiler(s) and related auxiliary equipment in the production of steam and/or hot water to maintain heat in the various campus buildings.

During cooling season provide maintenance of central heating plant and auxiliary equipment, HVAC and plumbing equipment as assigned.

Must be able to work with and have daily interaction with a diverse group of people including Archabbot, Prior, faculty department heads, students, tradesmen, contractors, vendors, custodian and others as required.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent, or graduation from a recognized trade school. Requires the ability to read and interpret sketches and drawings.

Experience: 12 to 24 months experience with high pressure steam systems preferred. HVAC maintenance and/or strong mechanical skills preferred.

Essential Duties:

  1. Prior to start of heating season ensure the powerhouse equipment and systems are inspected, tested and ready for operation.
  2. Perform duties required to start, stop, operate and monitor steam boilers and systems.
  3. Monitor the boilers and equipment to ensure they are in proper operating condition. Check and adjust operating parameters such as boiler water level, steam pressure, quality of stack emissions, steam temperature, etc., ensure proper operating levels of all fluids and steam are maintained. Record and chart observed data.
  4. Maintain the boilers and equipment and operating systems to ensure the trouble-free operation of the systems. Check and maintain chemical feed systems.
  5. Test and treat boiler system water. Blow down boilers as required. Record and chart data.
  6. Troubleshoot systems or equipment malfunctions and repair, replace or adjust component parts. Adjust systems controls as required to respond to system failures. Respond to emergency or breakdown and repair or have systems repaired.
  7. Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on steam system equipment.
  8. Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on HVAC equipment and systems during cooling season.
  9. Maintain tools, vehicles and equipment. Keep the powerhouse and mechanical rooms clean and orderly.
  10. Assist in coordination of regulatory inspections.
  11. Ability to properly use hand and power tools, testing equipment and measuring devices such as wet/dry bulb, thermometers, manometers, gauges, torches, leak detection, multi-meters and typical equipment to the trade.
  12. Perform all work in accordance with best practice and conform to code requirements.
  13. Provide prompt response to daily work orders, report material usage cost, and time to complete work orders.
  14. Record and notify supervisor of need for repairs. Report to supervisor of any unsafe conditions.
  15. Subject to being on-call, work weekends, and nights as needed to complete scheduled or emergency work.
  16. Perform snow removal duties as assigned including shoveling, applying deicers and operating snow removal equipment.
  17. Perform other related duties as assigned.


Other Duties:

  1. Meet on regular basis with Director of Facilities to discuss work schedule, maintenance needs and capital improvement needs and budget reviews. Assist in the development and execution of a preventive maintenance program.


Special Challenges and Environment:

  1. Must understand how to follow safety precautions and procedures both verbal and written.
  2. Required to occasionally lift and/or manipulate heavy objects. Ability to transport, place and assemble large mechanical components.
  3. Required to coordinate efforts with custodial, trades and grounds staff, contractors and vendors.
  4. Work involves exposure to elements of dirt, biohazards, dust, temperature, weather, fumes, high voltage, noise and odors.
  5. Must be able to perform work requiring considerable physical activity including lifting, pulling, pushing objects, bending, stooping. Lift and transport object weighing 50 pounds.
  6. Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, stand for long periods of time and work from heights including on roofs.
  7. Environment may involve some exposure to hazards, such as chemicals, and physical risks that are mitigated by and require following safety rules and precautions.
  8. Must understand and follow MSDS product sheet instructions.
  9. Ability to work in confined spaces.
  10. Must be able to adjust to continual changes while planning and finishing work assignments.
