April 27, 2024

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Nuclear Science Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

In this role, you will work in the Relativistic Nuclear Collisions (RNC) program within the Nuclear Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on the physics analysis and/or instrumentation aspects of high energy nuclear physics. You will participate in the design and development of the outer silicon tracker, based on Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) technology, for the future planned ALICE 3 detector. Work will include tracking simulations, geometry optimization, and physics simulations. The candidate may also conduct research towards one of the RNC group's physics interests. Possibilities include, but are not limited to, ALICE physics data analysis, EIC related R&D synergistic with ALICE 3, applications of Machine Learning to detector R&D or data analysis, or other established directions taking into account the interests of the successful candidate.

What You Will Do:

  • Contribute to the design and development of the outer silicon tracker for the future planned ALICE 3 detector.

  • Contribute to the physics interests of the RNC group, either through analysis of experimental data or through instrumentation/physics development of a future experiment project.

  • Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level.

  • Publish papers/reports in refereed journals, and make oral presentations of work.

  • Report results to supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Mentor students in their research at LBNL and UC Berkeley.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Nuclear/High-Energy Physics or a related discipline within the last 3 years.

  • Experience with data analysis and simulations of high-energy nuclear physics.

  • Proficiency in written and verbal dissemination of scientific results.

  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration in a research environment.

  • Proficiency in written and oral dissemination of scientific results.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with instrumentation and/or upgrade projects.

  • Experience with C++, root, python, or equivalent programming.

How To Apply:

Please go to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/25351 to create a profile and submit the requested application materials, Note that applications can only be made via this Academic Jobs Online URL. For inquiries please contact Kelly Rushing (krushing@lbl.gov), Nicole Apadula (nicoleapadula@lbl.gov) or Mateusz Ploskon (mploskon@lbl.gov).

The following requested application materials listed below must be submitted through Academic Jobs Online:

  1. Curriculum vitae.

  2. A list of up to ten relevant publications, including contributions for multi-author publications.

  3. A statement describing future research interests (3-page limit excluding figures and references).

  4. Arrange to have at least 3 letters of reference submitted (at least one reference from outside LBNL/UC Berkeley). Please direct the reference letters to Nicole Apadula, NicoleApadula@lbl.gov.

Salary:

The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000 - $6,257 and is expected to start at $5,954 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
