The West Virginia University Cancer Institute at West Virginia University Research Corporation is currently accepting applications for a Laboratory Technician.

About the opportunity

This position will work with the Principal Investigator (PI) and lab members on research aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying head and neck cancer. The incumbent will perform molecular biology and protein-based assays, conduct cell culture and animal experiments, assist the other laboratory staff, ensure regulatory compliance, and perform day-to-day maintenance and oversight of the laboratory. The incumbent will assist with generation of data and development of manuscripts grants for publication. This position reports to Dr. Scott Weed, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine.

What you'll do



  • Perform, manage and assist with independent laboratory experiments carried out in the Principal Investigator's (PI) laboratory that are essential for the achieving goals of the research projects. Prior experience is desirable in: Cell culture, transfection, DNA cloning, purification and isolation, RNA purification, Wester blotting, working with fluorescent plate readers and culturing recombinant proteins in e. coli. The candidate must be able to modify and optimize research protocols as needed for the successful completion of the specific experiment.
  • Responsible for maintaining existing cell lines and generating primary cultures from patient and animal tumors.
  • Function in the capacity of conducting daily laboratory maintenance including ordering and purchasing of supplies and equipment and keep proper records.
  • Make reagents and solutions for experiments; assist in maintaining laboratory glassware and sterilization procedures.
  • Maintain a well-organized notebook documenting experimental protocols and data. Consult at regular intervals with the PI for guidance in experimental design and for progress reports.
  • Communicate with others in the lab and collaborating laboratories in the Cancer Institue and BMM department on ongoing experiments, shared resources, maintenance and safety issues.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in, biology, biochemistry, clinical sciences or related subject area, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • 0-12 months preferred in wet lab experience in a research setting.
  • Prior research laboratory experience and skills in performing molecular biology experiments, cell culture and protein assays is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of undergraduate level chemistry, biology and/or biochemistry is required.
  • Proficient record keeping and communication skills.
