Data Visualization Specialist

Our research portfolio is rapidly expanding and is valued at approximately $460M annually. Recently, UIC played a critical role in the COVID19 vaccine and drug trials. The Advanced Cyberinfrastructure for Education and Research (ACER) is responsible for delivering cyberinfrastructure (e.g., HPC, AI, Cloud, Data Lake) and consulting services to over 3000 researchers. We are rapidly growing our team of engineers, computational scientists, and data scientists to deliver on UIC’s inspiring 5-year (2021-2026) Research Cyberinfrastructure strategic plan.

ACER seeks an experienced and motivated data visualization specialist with geospatial visualization skills to join our diverse and impactful team in supporting scientific research and discovery. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with researchers to help them more effectively analyze and visualize their data. Visualization techniques are rapidly evolving, so we are looking for candidates who can respond to change, pick up new technologies quickly and adapt to changing requirements. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Research Facilitation and Outreach, this position will work with faculty and staff to help select, design or implement the most appropriate tools and techniques for visual storytelling over a wide range of research domains. In addition, this position will develop and run trainings on visualization techniques for researchers across the campus.

The position will have options for flexible and hybrid work schedules.

 Salary Range: $70,000-$85,000


Minimum Requirements:

  •  M.S. or higher in GIS, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or other related scientific discipline
  • Strong understanding of data analysis, visualization, and storytelling for structured, unstructured, and geospatial data
  • Expertise in visualization methods such as geospatial, infographics, dashboards, scatter plot, and tree
  •  Design and development experience with data visualization tools such as R, Python, VisIt, Tableau, matplotlib and ggplot
  • Exposure to GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Maps is strongly preferred.
  •  Experience with using GPUs for accelerating computations and visualizations is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with various faculty, students, and staff.
  •  Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with new research labs and the student community.
