Job Summary

The School of Dentistry residency programs manager oversees the ten graduate dental education programs (Craniofacial Orthodontics, Dental Public Health, Endodontics, General Practice Residency, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontology, Prosthodontics) across 3 School of Dentistry departments to ensure compliance, accreditation, and that consistent practices and procedures are followed in accordance with School and UC policies.

The Residency Programs Manager serves as the administrative leader of the graduate dental education programs and partners with the residency program director, assistant dean for education, and departmental chief administrative officers, and departmental staff in the operational and financial management of the program(s). In addition, the residency program manager partners and collaborates with the Director of the Office of Graduate Medical Education to ensure GME accreditation requirements and agreements are followed.

This position requires a comprehensive and detailed understanding of national accreditation policies as well as a high degree of initiative and independent judgment and communicating with faculty, fellows, residents, and learners and managing internal and external program relations. The role crosses many specialty areas including administrative, finance, human resources and event planning to name a few. The position is essential in training program operations and compliance, and is a primary resource for learners, faculty, administrative staff, and GME office.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

Since our founding in 1881, the UCSF School of Dentistry has striven to educate the leading practitioners, scholars and faculty members of the next generation. As a leading institution of oral and craniofacial health, our educational programs have grown to include, in addition to our DDS programs, an array of MS and PhD, post-graduate and residency programs. The School currently offers ten residency/postgraduate training programs: Craniofacial Orthodontics, Dental Public Health, Endodontics, General Practice Residency, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontology, and Prosthodontics.

Our students and faculty handle over 120,000 patient visits a year in our comprehensive Dental Center, and many of our students staff 14 community-based externship sites. The school is also one of the top oral and craniofacial research enterprises in the world, ranked the top dental school in the country in research funding from the National Institutes of Health for 25 years and home to several leading translational research programs.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 5+ years of directly relevant experience
  • 3+ years of lead/supervisory/managerial experience
  • Broad knowledge of health professions education industry, including educational concepts, curriculum, and competencies of a specific health profession.
  • Leadership skills in employee supervision and HR administration to effectively lead and motivate others. Conflict resolution skills to resolve personnel issues and counsel assigned staff to develop cooperative working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a complex, challenging environment. Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility, anticipates and effectively handles change.
  • Ability to organize program operations and sites in an efficient and effective manner through improving health professions education program processes, procedures, and systems.
  • Interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with peers, learners, multidisciplinary team members, senior management, and assigned staff.
  • Ability to collaborate within and across health professions to integrate / coordinate program activities and resolve problems.
  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution. Demonstrates good problem-solving and analytical skills. Creatively addresses complex or new problems.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate through all mediums and with all groups. Demonstrated abilities to listen actively, persuade, advise, and counsel.
  • In-depth knowledge of educational software and technologies to promote a wide-range of teaching and learning goals.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in a related area
  • Broad knowledge of campus, medical center, HR and university policies and processes. Knowledge of relevant federal, state and local laws and regulations including national accrediting organizations and state and federal licensing and regulatory offices.
