Job Summary

Public Safety Ambassadors / Security Guards protect and guard University of California property; maintain order among public and UCSF community; monitor and control entry to restricted areas; inspect areas to prevent fires, accidents and other hazards; direct visitors and answer questions concerning building and/or exhibit layouts; assist in first aid or lifesaving actions; de-escalate situations as needed and perform other related duties as required. This job involves: climbing stairs; pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds; carrying and lifting 21-30 pounds; and the ability to run short distances.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Police Department provides contemporary police services including criminal investigation, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, emergency management, and site security services to a daily population of over 50,000 people at University and contract locations. Founded in 1864, UCSF includes the 107-acre Parnassus campus that is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy; a graduate division for pre and postdoctoral scientists; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals; and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. UCSF is considered one of the nation's premier health sciences teaching, training, and research centers. UCSF is the only UC campus dedicated exclusively to the health sciences.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid BSIS Guard Card
  • Excellent customer service and effective problem-solving skills; ability to fluently speak, read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English
  • Demonstrated ability to work calmly under stress in emergencies; sound judgment skills
  • General PC knowledge and demonstrated proficiency using MS Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Demonstrated record of excellent attendance and reliability
Note: Physical/health screening, fingerprinting and background check required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience in the security field
  • Military experience


  • Valid California Driver's License (required)
  • Current C.P.R. certification ( required within 6 months of hire)
  • Basic First Aid certification (required within 6 months of hire)
  • CPI Training (required within 6 months of hire)
  • AED Certification (required within 6 months of hire)
