Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner will act as an independent member of the team, taking responsibility for the safe delivery of care for inpatient newborns. This team member will meet productivity expectations as set forth by the Division Chief, performing any duties related to patient care activities that are appropriate and clearly delineated.

National NP Certification required for this role, NNP-BC.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) was founded in 1964 and pioneered fetal surgery and is a 58-bed unit that provides care for and has the expertise to treat the smallest, sickest and most fragile babies needing surgery for heart, lung, gastrointestinal and other life-threatening conditions. Our neonatal heart program is one of the largest in the country, treating almost 200 newborns with heart disease each year. The ICN is a Regional Intensive Care Nursery and works with a network of 24 hospitals in Northern California to provide neonatology care.

Required Qualifications

NP 1

  • Master's Degree in Nursing with a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Specialization
  • Minimum two (2) years recent working experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as a Registered Nurse

NP 2
  • Master's Degree in Nursing with a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Specialiszation
  • Minimum one (1) year recent working experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or recent completion of a Neonatal Fellowship

Preferred Qualifications


  • Minimum 3 years experience working as an Neonatal NP in a Level III or Level IV NICU

License/Certification


  • California driver's license (CDL) if required for position
  • Must hold current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work

  • Must hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California
  • Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master's degree program as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Must obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer)
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments
  • Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement
  • Must hold current AHA NPR as a minimum requirement
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice
  • Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1


UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
