This position shall provide evaluative, diagnostic, and treatment procedures for pediatric though geriatric patients for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department. This position requires a depth of theoretic and applied knowledge for diagnosing and treating patients with augmentative communication needs, developmental speech and language disorders, acquired cognitive and language disorders, fluency, pediatric feeding, dysphagia, aphasia, apraxia and dysarthria. The senior speech position requires advanced knowledge and a minimum of two year's experience treating patients with the disorders listed above.

In addition, the senior speech pathologist will have a defined area of specialization (e.g. swallowing disorders, aphasia, pediatric feeding, etc.) and will assume the role of providing ongoing training to staff in addition to providing resources and updates on current research pertinent to the area of specialization.

This position functions autonomously, providing teaching and consultation with other departments, physician and therapy specialists within UCDMC, educational specialists as well as other community agencies/service providers. Requires coordination with primary care/service providers and management of insurance authorizations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • California Licensed Speech Pathologist
  • Must possess a master's degree in Speech Pathology, license through the Speech Pathology Examining Committee and Certificate of Clinical Competence through the American Speech, Language and Hearing Associate once hired
  • Two (2) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience providing direct clinical care to a range of complex patients with competency treating patients in outpatient settings.
  • Experience evaluating and diagnosing disorders of cognition, speech, voice, fluency, language, and dysphagia including scoring and interpretation of results.
  • Experience extracting pertinent information to relate to patient and/or family members.
  • Experience knowing how patients should be responding to treatment, average length of stay in treatment, recognition of appropriate versus inappropriate treatment for each patient.
  • Experience establishing programs based on testing results appropriate for each patient.
  • Experience recognizing the need for program modification.
  • Experience extracting pertinent behaviors and incorporating these into daily written progress notes.
  • Experience with home programs and organization into individual programs for family implementation.
  • Experience reporting to referring physician regarding patient diagnosis, skills and prognosis using appropriate terminology and information.
  • Experience extracting pertinent information to relate to family members, be empathetic and supportive.
  • Experience maintaining patient records and process necessary billing forms and treatment authorizations in prompt, accurate manner.
  • Experience maintaining accurate schedules and personal workload accounts.
  • Experience providing instruction and supervision, as required, for student interns and medical students
  • Advanced knowledge in area of specialization (e.g., swallowing disorders, aphasia, pediatric feeding, etc.)
  • Advanced knowledge of current therapeutic and evaluative instruments especially as pertains to area of specialty.
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate assessment instruments, test administration procedures, scoring, and interpretation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of need for program modification based upon a patient's performance.
  • Knowledge of various home programs and community resources to provide to patients.
