Position Description

The Department of Internal Services is currently offering an exciting and challenging opportunity for individuals interested in furthering their career as a Fleet Services Supervisor.

The Fleet Services Supervisor, reporting to the Fleet Services Manager, provides day-to-day supervision of staff responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on automotive and/or heavy duty equipment. Supervisory duties include interviewing, selecting, training, assigning, evaluating, promoting, and disciplining subordinate staff.
Please note: The current vacancy is within heavy duty shop; however the eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill a permanently allocated position in another area as vacancies occur. The selected candidate for the immediate vacancy will oversee the day-to-day operations of the heavy duty shop, welding shop, and parts room. Experience with heavy duty on-road and off-road equipment is highly desirable.

Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back, and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

OPTION 1 :

Experience: Six (6) years of full-time, paid work experience as an automotive and/or heavy duty mechanic performing inspections and maintenance, diagnosing malfunctions, and repairing engines and other components, one (1) year of which must have been served in a supervisory capacity.

Substitution: Completion of fifteen (15) semester units of coursework in automotive and/or diesel technology, or a closely related field, that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

OPTION 2:

Experience: Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience as an automotive and/or heavy duty mechanic performing inspections and maintenance, diagnosing malfunctions, and repairing engines and other components, one (1) year of which must have been served in a supervisory capacity.

Certification: Completion of an approved automotive or heavy duty apprentice mechanic program certified by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS), California Department of Industrial Relations.

In addition to the options listed above, the following is also required:

License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one of the processes listed below:
  • Certify Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived, and the names will be certified without an examination.
  • Written Examination - If required, the written examination will be offered in an online format. Please indicate on the supplemental questionnaire if you have the ability to complete an online examination.

Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to 12 months) and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
