Position Description

The Department of Public Works and Planning currently has an excellent career opportunity available for motivated and experienced individuals interested in the position of Senior Tree Trimmer. The selected applicant will plan, coordinate, and supervise the activities of a tree maintenance crew, in addition to being primarily responsible for performing the most difficult tree maintenance work.

The Tree Trimmer classification series is responsible for all phases of tree maintenance work throughout the County of Fresno. Incumbents will be responsible for climbing, trimming, pruning, and topping trees that can reach over 40 feet in height. Other duties include removing trees when necessary; maintenance and inspection of trees for physical evidence of pest and fungus infestation; operating necessary tree maintenance equipment; and leading a crew who assist in tree maintenance duties.
Note: The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.
Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity. This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience climbing, trimming, topping and removing trees.

License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.
Incumbents must obtain a valid Class "B" driver's license with passenger endorsement and no restriction on air brakes prior to the completion of the probationary period (12 months) or be rejected on probation.

Possession of a valid Class "A" driver's license with passenger endorsement and no restriction on air brakes may be required.

Other: Candidates may be required to participate in the County's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program, which includes an initial and subsequent random testing, as required by Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • Certify without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived and the names will be certified without an examination.
Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to 12 months) and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
