Step 6 effective 7/8/24 ($70,824 - $90,402 Annually)
3% effective 1/20/25 ($72,956 - $93,106 Annually)

The Fresno County Public Library is offering a challenging and rewarding opportunity to a highly motivated individual interested in pursuing a career as a Supervising Librarian.
The Supervising Librarian is responsible for supervising assigned staff engaged in a variety of activities ranging from routine clerical work to providing library services to patrons and professional librarians. Supervisory responsibilities include planning, evaluating, and implementing goals and objectives; program development; budget preparation and maintenance; selection and purchase of books and materials; scheduling work and establishing policies and procedures; and interviewing, selecting, training, disciplining, and promoting subordinates.

Please note: The current vacancy is in the San Joaquin Valley Library System (SJVLS) division and requires possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent. The SJVLS is a Joint Powers Agency consisting of 10 library systems and 106 library branches which provides networking and automation services to their members. The incumbent must be willing and able to work evenings, weekends (including Sundays), travel to various branch libraries, supervise and coordinate the work of subordinate staff, and will be responsible for the administration of the library management software (Horizon ILS). The incumbent will be responsible for oversight and planning of SJVLS goals and objectives and will be the primary contact for member directors and technology vendors as related to the ILS and digital collections, as well as lead on several committees and grant related projects. Experience with ILS and SQL is preferred.

Positions in this classification are in Medical Group II - Moderate Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require moderate physical effort using arms, legs, back, and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) 10-25 pounds, and occasionally over 25 pounds. Generally, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Possession of a master's degree in Library Science from a college or university that has been accredited by the American Library Association.

Experience: Three (3) years of full-time, paid professional librarian work experience.

License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent, may be required.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one of the processes listed below:

  • Certify Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived and the names will be certified without an examination.
  • Oral Examination - An oral examination includes a panel consisting of at least two members within a similar field of expertise as the vacancy. Candidates are asked structured questions and must respond orally to allow the panel to evaluate the specific qualifications of each applicant.
    • If required, the oral examination will be administered in an online format via the Spark Hire platform.

Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to 12 months) and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
