Job Description

Grace is seeking a Process Technology (PT) Scientist to join our Specialty Catalyst Process Support Team at our Baton Rouge, LA manufacturing site. This role reports to a PT Manager.

The role's primary function is to participate in product development and improvement efforts, starting at the laboratory scale through the pilot plant and commercial plant scale. This involves solving technical problems via synthesis and characterization of transition metal components and main group organometallic precursors. Routes to success require hypothesis formation, investigation of structure-property relationships through structural and electronic characterization, mining of data for insights, and innovative synthetic solutions. Solid technical skills combined with leadership and communication skills are vital to success.

The PT Scientist must be able to participate in an on-call Quality Control support rotation work schedule for pilot and commercial facility which includes nights/weekends/holiday. This coverage will be shared amongst all other team members and consist of 1 week every 5 weeks.

Responsibilities
  • Support product development through hands-on synthesis and analytical characterization
  • Participate in raw material qualification work
  • Participate in process safety activities
  • Participate in Global Network for technology information and transfer
  • Ideation for process improvements
  • Participate in multi-functional teams to troubleshoot and streamline processes in support of manufacturing plant
  • Document and communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Develop analytical techniques to monitor processes as improvements are demonstrated
  • Develop and implement new technologies for business opportunities
  • Lead projects to successful completion
  • Mentor and train other Chemists and Scientists
  • Willing to participate in on-call Quality Control support for pilot and commercial facility
  • Follow site policies and safe work ethics, maintaining clean, organized laboratory
Physical Requirements and Environment
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials
  • Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft.
Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Inorganic/Organometallic/Organic Chemistry
  • Strong inorganic and organometallic materials know-how
  • Strong background in inorganic, organic, and organometallic synthetic methods, including air/water sensitive synthesis techniques
  • Experience in analytical characterization of organometallic materials, including specialized techniques for air-sensitive samples
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2 years industrial experience
  • Ability to summarize and present complex technical concepts to non-scientific audiences
  • Independent technical project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Experience with industrial safety practices
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience with pyrophoric chemical and waste handling
