The Tax Compliance Manager manages multi-state and local sales and use tax, property tax, and other business tax administration and compliance, including research and analysis of related tax laws and communication with state and local jurisdictions and authorities, for multiple legal entities.

Core Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review monthly sales and use tax data provided to third-party return preparer.

  • Review sales and use tax returns prepared by third-party, calculate and submit required monthly funding payment, and clear accruals against payments in SAP ERP.

  • Manage and review both customer and vendor sales tax exemption certificates.

  • Prepare, review, and timely and accurately file all other indirect tax returns and reports.

  • Liaison with third-party consultant for property tax reporting, including gathering and providing all information necessary to complete the annual property tax rendition reports for production facilities, sales offices, and cold storage inventories.

  • Coordinate payment of property tax bills and prepare monthly accrual of property tax expense considering business activities impacting property tax liability.

  • Prepare, review, and timely and accurately file all unclaimed property reports, including mailing of due diligence letters to property owners according to each state's requirements. Track and handle responses to due diligence letters.

  • Manage all indirect tax state audits, including responding to requests for data, coordinating site visits by auditors, and reviewing all findings.

  • Research state sales and use tax and other indirect tax issues and document findings.

  • Assist with the management of state tax incentive programs.

  • Prepare general ledger journal entries by performing calculations and analysis, maintaining supporting records, and reconciling accounts for property tax and other indirect tax accounts.

  • Perform account reconciliations for assigned general ledger accounts and make appropriate adjustments or correcting entries.

  • Review account reconciliations prepared, and entries posted by direct report, following policy.

  • Provide indirect tax support for new acquisitions and system conversions. This includes reviewing, interpreting, and converting financial data as well as process definition and documentation.

  • Perform accounting and internal control responsibilities under GAAP, SOX 404, and company policy.

  • Support semi-annual, annual, and ad hoc corporate tax and financial reporting requests.

  • Initiate and manage process improvements and system enhancements for role and function to increase data integrity and provide quality customer service to business partners.

  • Review and update business process narratives as necessary.

  • Lead the implementation effort for various tax tool and software projects, participating in blueprinting, testing, system training, data conversion, and post-go-live analysis.

  • Administer various tax software tools and serve as subject matter expert on functionality.

  • Complete special projects and ad hoc assignments as requested.

  • Cross-train with other personnel as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Accounting or related field and 5+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.

  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in team management/development or project leadership is required.

  • CPA Certificate, preferred.

  • Public accounting experience is strongly encouraged.

  • Strong research skills and ability to comprehend tax implications.

  • Thorough knowledge of financial and business principles, including GAAP, and an ability to grasp company financial policies and protocols.

  • Strong experience with general ledger, account reconciliation, and analysis.

  • Strong experience working with indirect tax including sales and use tax, property tax, and unclaimed property.

  • Experience in manufacturing industry a plus.

  • Knowledge of SAP ERP software, preferred.

  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office tools.

  • Knowledge of Avalara ECM Pro, Avalara Tax Research, RIA Checkpoint, and Sovos Taxware preferred.

  • Strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
