We are currently accepting applications for one (1) full-time (40 hrs/wk) position:

Arborist
Department of Public Works

Complete Hourly Range: $25.19 to $30.60 per hour
with excellent health, dental and leave benefits

The REQUIRED Town of Lexington application form must be received in the Town's Human

Scope of Work
This position performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the care and maintenance of Town-owned trees and
shrubbery.
Supervision
Received Grounds Superintendent or Crew Chief
Exercised May assign work to laborers

Essential Job Functions
* Plants, transplants and removes trees and shrubbery; prepares grounds for planting; performs stump
grinding; cuts, trims, repairs and shapes trees.
* Fertilizes, treats sprays and waters trees; conducts follow-up maintenance on grounds and areas
around trees; applies pesticides and participates in activities to control weeds, poison ivy and other
vegetation, insects and parasites.
* Climbs trees using appropriate equipment and apparatus; operates bucket truck and other equipment
to trim and remove trees; follows appropriate safety guidelines to conduct aerial work and work
around power lines.
* Inspects and maintains vehicles and equipment; repairs equipment or notifies Road Machinery
division of repairs needed.
* Operates, repairs and sharpens clippers, saws and axes.
* Operates various types of riding mowers and tractors; assists with maintenance of grounds and right
of ways; assists with maintenance of parklands, walking and biking paths and athletic fields; assists
with maintenance of Town pool facilities.
* Participates in snow removal operations.

* Installs and removes holiday lights and decorations; assists in Christmas tree recycling program; hauls
trees to dump site and operates tree chipper.
* Assists with parade set-up and take-down.
* Repairs street and traffic lights.
* Provides effective and efficient customer service and promotes and maintains responsive community
relations.
* Follows safe work practices.

Requirements of Work
Graduation from high school (or GED equivalent) plus additional technical or specialized training, including
or supplemented by at least 4 years of landscaping or arborist-related activities; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills:
Knowledge of * Methods and techniques of maintenance, repair and care of trees and shrubbery.
* The use of climbing and aerial lift equipment and other tools and machinery used in
the maintenance, repair and care of trees and shrubbery.
* Departmental policies, procedures and practices.
* Applicable rules, regulations, codes, ordinances and safety standards that govern the
performance of the duties being performed.
Ability to * Operate tools, equipment and vehicles used in the maintenance, repair and care of
trees and shrubbery and other essential job functions.
* Perform aerial operations; climb and work in trees using ladders, ropes and/or other
equipment.
* Understand and carry out instructions.
* Work independently, with little supervision.
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers
and the general public.
Skill in * The operation of heavy trucks, vehicles, equipment, machinery and power tools
used in forestry operations.
Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of a valid driver's license; Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement;
Massachusetts Class 2B Hoisting License; EHAP certificate.

* Work is performed mostly outdoors; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and
various types of power tools, equipment and machinery.
* Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, prolonged visual concentration
and the ability to adjust focus.
* While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk
and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with
hands and arms.
* The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
* The employee is frequently exposed to adverse weather conditions including extreme heat, cold,
wetness and humidity; and to other unpleasant conditions such as dim lighting, dust, odors, noise,
vibration, toxic agents, electrical currents, heavy machinery, smoke and disease.
* The employee must frequently lift and/or move up in excess of 50 pounds.
