JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY:
The Chief Mate/First Mate has primary authority, responsibility and accountability for the preparation of all safety equipment to ensure the effective operational readiness at all times. Coordinate and delegate crew work assignments and to relieve Master/Mate who is on Watch. Proven ship handling skills or on the job training are necessary to master the vessel's propulsion and steering system.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Stand two four (4) hour sea/mooring watches per day.
* The Chief Mate must be skilled in the use of all sound navigational practices including route and voyage planning, piloting, celestial navigation (when applicable.)
* Assist in docking of barges in a safe and proficient manner.
* Must be familiar with electronic navigation and communication equipment (Depth Sounders, Radar, Gyrocompass, GPS, Radios, GMDSS, etc.)
* Responsible for carrying out Master's Maintenance Plan.
* Responsible for maintaining a healthy work environment and positive morale aboard the vessel.
* In the event of a failed hazardous material transfer, oil spill, accident, illness or other serious marine incident, the Mate maintains a close work environment with the Master and acts as a scribe for events and intermediary for the Master.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
* Required to possess a US Coast Guard License, Mate of Steam of Motor Vessels of 500 GRT Upon Oceans, with Mate of towing Vessels Upon Oceans and Western Rivers Endorsement.
* Current Unlimited Radar Observer & ARPA, GMDSS.
* Must have a current STCW (II/1 & IV/2)
* Must obtain TWIC, Passport, and Driver's License.
* Valid Certificates for First Aid and CPR and Advanced Fire Fighting.
* Hold a valid USCG Medical Certificate.
* Maintain VPDSD Training Endorsement.
* Familiarity with USCG sub Chapter I requirements.
* Must achieve Fit for Duty status on pre-employment physical & drug screen.
