Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

We are in search of new talent in the following position...

Position: Housing Specialist

The Housing Specialist will assist the young adults in the program with securing affordable, permanent housing. The housing specialist responsibilities include liaising with community organizations, government agencies, and property owners to source the means and negotiate terms that enable our young adults to rent suitable housing.

Transitional Living Program assists youth in preparing for life as adults. Our staff teach and prepare youth in the program in the areas of job preparation, navigating housing options and financial literacy to manage paychecks, bills, and savings. Minimum Qualifications:



  • The position requires an Associate's degree with two years of related experience preferred in housing placement services for low-income and/or homeless population.
  • Knowledge of federal guidelines for public and private low-income housing required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • This position shall also have a valid state driver's license with a safe driving record that meets agency policies.



Housing Specialist Principal Responsibilities:



  1. Facilitate groups on building healthy living skills, communication and conflict resolution, training in financial management, identifying unhealthy influences, and setting boundaries with friends and family.
  2. Conduct housing eligibility assessments of all applicable young adults.
  3. Develop linkages with real estate companies and office of public housing.
  4. Maintain and update listings of permanent affordable housing.
  5. Develop and facilitate workshops and individual sessions on skills and information necessary to acquire and maintain independent permanent housing.
  6. Track placements and conduct follow up of the young adult placed into permanent housing.
  7. Assist young adult with all forms for housing applications.
