JOB SUMMARY
The Manager of the Citizenship Project at New-York Historical Society is responsible for managing the logistics and administration of the Citizenship Project - a program that helps Green Card holders prepare to take the United States citizenship civics test. This person is an accomplished educator and program manager with a background in United States History and Government who is committed to supporting aspiring citizens through museum education best practices. The Manager runs all day-to-day operations of the program and directly manages a team that includes one full-time person and a cohort of per diem Citizenship Educators. The Manager also contributes to additional programs and initiatives within the Education Division, as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES


  • Manage all program logistics and administration;
  • Train, supervise, and manage Citizenship Project staff and volunteers including the full-time Citizenship Project Coordinator and a cohort of per diem Citizenship Educators;
  • Develop, revise, and implement a curriculum designed to prepare applicants to pass the Civics portion of the USCIS naturalization exam using the extensive collections and existing education programming of the New-York Historical Society;
  • Organize and staff a robust schedule of courses online, at the museum, and in partnership with organizations across the New York metropolitan area and beyond;
  • Maintain the Citizenship Project website;
  • Collaborate with leaders in the citizenship and immigration communities to introduce and promote the program widely;
  • Manage a national partnership program that includes training sessions and other collaboration efforts;
  • Represent New-York Historical Society at local, regional, and national conferences and networking events, as needed;
  • Write and lead teacher professional development workshops on civics education;
  • Contribute to other Education Division initiatives that may require additional lesson plan writing/editing, curriculum development, and other contributions;
  • Additional duties as requested.


REQUIREMENTS


  • Bachelor's degree in United States History and Government or in History Education required. Master's degree in American History or History Education preferred;
  • Experience writing and leading museum programs for adult learners required;
  • Experience building partnerships and cultivating relationships with institutional partners;
  • Proven ability to take initiative and execute projects efficiently and thoroughly from start to finish;
  • Creative thinker with ability to innovate within parameters;
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines set by internal and external stakeholders;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent customer service skills;
  • Must be highly organized, detail oriented, and self-motivated;
  • Must have a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend availability;
  • Spanish language fluency preferred;
  • Knowledge of US Immigration system and naturalization process preferred;
  • Experience leading education programs for English Language Learners preferred;
  • Prior experience managing part-time and/or full-time staff a plus.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
This position will require the employee to lift, bend, stoop, walk, speak and stand for up to 7 hours in a day. Sedentary computer work is also required.
