Position Summary
The primary responsibilities of an Academic Advisor for Intended Majors in the Exploratory Center are meeting with assigned students in-person or remotely, providing each student with accurate information about the student's intended degree program, making recommendations about course selection for upcoming semesters, generating advising forms detailing these recommendations, and maintaining notes about these meetings.

Advisors also assist students with referrals to other units at UGA, including tutoring, services, and other forms of academic assistance.

An EC Intended Advisor will maintain consistent contact with their students, maintain accurate student records, and respond in a timely manner to questions from their students. An advisor will demonstrate a perspective that genuinely appreciates, understands, supports, and effectively accommodates a wide variety of student backgrounds and experiences.

Regular attendance at staff meetings is mandatory and workshop attendance is also an expected part of the position. All Advisors should be available to work throughout June, July, and early August Orientation sessions for incoming first-year and transfer students, as well as Orientation sessions conducted in December/January.

EC Intended Advisors may be assigned EC Explore rosters as well, depending on the needs of the office. Training will be provided for cross-advising assignments.

Advising Students
  • Meet with Intended Major students, or Undecided/Exploring students as needed, in person or remotely to recommend courses for the next semester, prepare advising forms, answer student questions, maintain communication with students via email and drop-in sessions, maintain thorough advising notes about appointments and other contact with students, and direct students to appropriate resources on campus. This involves extensive prep time and proficiency with various campus systems, software, and resources.
