Machine Operator - Pickling Facility

Who we are looking for:

We are currently searching for a Machine Operator in our Special Metal Processing Facility in Harvey, IL. Reporting to the Manufacturing Supervisor, this person will be responsible to run and operate the various stations (wet, yard, entry, exit and bander) throughout the facility.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 1 year experience in a fast paced manufacturing environment, processing steel. Experience in lean manufacturing or business system-based company is a plus.

What you'll do:



  • Sample rinse water and perform required titrations
  • Sample acid tanks and perform required titrations
  • Make necessary adjustments to process when titration results are out of specification
  • Monitor the condition of waste water going to sewer and make any required adjustments to assure it meets standards
  • Collect data from various meters located around the plant
  • Clean iron sludge filter press whenever required
  • Assist other operators between required tests in any and all tasks required of that position (wet, yard, entry, exit, bander)
  • Receive Coils (unload trucks, mark coils, process paperwork)
  • Load / Unload the pickle line
  • Transfer received coils to the yard for storage
  • Transfer pickled coils to main facility (when transfer car is down)
  • Empty hoppers (steel, garbage, & sludge)
  • Drive Hyster 100 to main facility to get bands, clips, etc.
  • Pre-inspect Taylor / Hyster 550 / 100 for safety, fluids, etc.
  • Unload / load deliveries (resurfaced rolls, totes, etc.)
  • Load coils onto trucks for shipping
  • Fuel Taylor 650 / Hyster 100 & fill any necessary fluids (oil, etc.)
  • Cut bands from wide coils
  • Verify coil markings match run schedule
  • Use control switches to manipulate line to load and unload steel wide coils
  • Recognize and communicate defects in raw and finished products
  • Monitor proper application of coatings per customer specification
  • Inspect finished product per customer specifications
  • Apply steel banding to finished wide coils
  • Mark and tag finished wide coils per customer specifications
  • Operate remote crane to move finished wide coils to delivery area


What you'll bring:



  • Experience in industrial manufacturing
  • Ability to read a tape measure and micrometer
  • Ability to pass the post offer employment process with drug screen


Within 3 months, you'll:



  • Show progress and/or complete job specific training
  • Be well-versed in Atkore's Business System and the importance of your role to daily operations
  • Gain a basic understanding of required duties and job expectations.
