  • What is a Medical Assistant? The Medical Assistant (MA) is a clinical position working in a healthcare setting, usually outpatient or ambulatory facilities, with a high level of patient contact. Medical Assistants work collaboratively with healthcare practitioners, care team, and admin/clerical staff to effectively deliver patient care. MAs are also cross-trained to perform administrative and clerical duties.
  • Applications will be accepted through June 2024. Candidates are highly encouraged to include a cover letter with their application, explaining why they wish to become a Medical Assistant.

  • Apprenticeship Highlights:

    • Medical Assistant Apprentices are Memorial Hospital employees who receive full-time wages for hours training in the practices, along with classroom time. The position starts late August 2024 and runs through early May 2025.
    • This is an accelerated apprenticeship accompanied by ample support and resources to assist you throughout the program.
    • Apprentices will enroll in White Mountains Community College Medical Assistant Certificate Program, a 9-month, credit-bearing program. Memorial Hospital will cover tuition expenses above and beyond grants and scholarships received by the student, making the apprenticeship a tuition-free program!
    • Apprentices are eligible for Memorial Hospital's comprehensive benefit package.




Position Summary






    • The Medical Assistant Apprentice will function in a training capacity, working alongside a mentor while completing their job responsibilities. The Apprentice will assist providers and the care team in the care of patients, promoting a smooth flow of patients through the office and help to create a calm, supportive atmosphere. The Apprentice will only perform set skills that they have completed in their skills lab with a passing grade and are qualified to perform alongside a mentor. These skills will include clinical and clerical duties as necessary to care for patients. They will be required to pay attention to detail and accuracy and conduct all interactions with patients and personnel in a courteous and respectful manner while maintaining confidentiality. The Apprentice is required to conduct all responsibilities consistent with policies, procedures, and in compliance with all applicable laws or mandates relating to patient care and activities.




  • Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)



    • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Must be accepted and enrolled into the Southern Maine Community College Medical Assisting Apprenticeship Program. Throughout the Apprenticeship, all courses including Skills Labs must be passes with a grade of C or better in order to remain in the Apprenticeship.


    • License/Certifications: Current BLS certification required prior to clinical training.


    • Experience: N/A


    • Must maintain confidentiality at all times.


    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary for interacting with patients, physicians, supervisors and other staff with the ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others.


    • Ability to organize and accomplish multiple tasks and to have the flexibility to meet changing demands on a daily basis.


    • Ability to project a pleasant and professional image even under stressful situations.


    • Proficient computer skills.
