Scope of Position

The Respiratory Therapy Supervisor oversees the daily operations and management of the Respiratory Therapists. The supervisor will assure day-to-day staff supervision in multiple hospitals, assigning staff on shifts, developing schedules, clinical operations with regards to escalated patient and provider concerns and quality of services. This position is responsible for ensuring timely processing of documents needed for compliance of regulatory requirements, optimizing resources, following policy and procedures and maintaining excellent customer satisfaction levels. This position requires the ability to provide and support all respiratory care which includes treatments, oxygen and humidity therapy, mechanical ventilation and whole blood analysis with operational methods. This position also requires the supervisor to be available and responsive to different hospitals on a regular basis.

Position Summary

The Respiratory Supervisor has primary responsibility for the daily management of all therapists, scheduling, and meeting patient care demands. This includes management of staff in patient care operations needed to assure compliance with quality standards, equipment and regulations established by the Medical Center. Customer satisfaction includes maintaining excellent customer satisfaction levels. The Supervisor will also assist in the development of job descriptions, postings, and hiring, as well as oversee the orientation and on-boarding of new staff while assuring compliance with departmental policies and operations. As part of the respiratory team, interacts with providers, nurses and clinical staff to facilitate efficient communication and process coordination.

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire:

Bachelors degree required, preferably in Respiratory Therapy. Current respiratory therapy license from the Ohio State Medical Board required. Three years of respiratory experience in an acute care facility required. Successful completion of RRT examination offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care, in-depth knowledge of cardio-pulmonary pathology and physiology and techniques of therapeutic interventions. Demonstrated management and supervisory experience preferred.

On-going:

Must comply with State Medical Board of Ohio licensure laws and rules. Stays current on the state-of-the-art cardia-pulmonary care, with an emphasis on critical care. Stays current on healthcare management trends.

Job Relationships

Supervisory Responsibility: Directly supervises Team Leads, Respiratory Therapists, Students and Respiratory Care Therapists.

Contacts: Physicians, nurses, therapists, clinical and administrative staff, patients, visitors, students, leaders.

Responsible to: Assistant Director, Respiratory Therapy.

Physical/Visual/Mental Requirements

Lifting, carrying, and pulling of objects weighing between 30-80 lbs. (i.e. ventilators, tanks, monitors).

Standing, walking, climbing, stooping, pulling (i.e. patients, stairs/ramps, tubing changes, bagging)

Work Environment

The work involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, additional safety education and/or health risk monitoring, e.g. working around carts, sharps, chemicals and infectious diseases. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, shields.

Duties and Responsibilities

60% Operations and Staff Supervision

  • Oversees the daily activities and staff ensuring quality patient care, excellent customer service, and adequate staffing levels across shifts and sites.
  • Resolves issues that are escalated patient concerns to ensure patient care needs are met. Coordinates staff and sites to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Communicates departmental and Medical Center policy and procedures and ensures compliance; assists with the implementation of new procedures.
  • Collaborates in identifying and correcting factors that contribute to variances in standards of practice.
  • Assures compliance with JCAHO, HIPAA, and other regulatory standards.
  • Facilitates the quality assurance process. Maintains QA goals and makes suggestions for areas of improvement.
  • Evaluates equipment for purchase or deletion from inventory, maintains adequate inventory of respiratory equipment and supplies, and coordinates and supervises the equipment cleaning and assembly.
  • Assists in tracking of data that reflects customer satisfaction, QA compliance, productivity, and financial improvement initiatives.
  • Conducts monitoring of individual staff and unit productivity and involves staff in the improvement process.
  • Takes the lead role in motivating and directing the team to be efficient, timely, accurate, and provide excellent customer service.
  • Assesses work volume and assigns staff according to core team and workload.
  • Prepares monthly schedules according to budgetary requirements, maintaining minimal acceptable staffing.
  • Interviews, selects, and/or recommends appropriate applicants for hire minimizing staff turnover. Oversees orientation and training of new employees and students.
  • Conducts annual and bi-annual performance evaluations, counsel and mentor employees, and initiates corrective action as necessary.
  • Maintains staff files and maintain accurate paperwork and documentation.
  • Identifies areas of focus for staff education and training. Coordinates department in-services and supplemental training programs.
  • Assures staff competency including the completion of mandatory educational and health requirements, and licensure verification. Adjusts staffing hours to meet patient testing and procedure service needs.

20% Customer Service

  • Takes responsibility for excellence in customer service. Ensures that respiratory treatments are completed as expediently as possible while maintaining high levels of patient satisfaction.
  • Identifies and works to resolve factors that may contribute to a problematic patient outcome, giving consideration to both internal and external customers, staff and physicians.
  • Interacts with other departments to facilitate high levels of patient satisfaction as well as staff engagement.
  • Assist with coverage at the hospitals in order to maintain good patient satisfaction and quality assurance.

10% Committees/Special Projects/Policies amp; Procedures

  • Serves on selected committees as assigned by the manager or director.
  • Writes and revises policies and procedures as necessary for approval by Director.
  • Assists in preparing and monitoring budgets and financial reports to assure adherence to annual budgets.
  • Attends to other duties and special projects as assigned by the department senior manager and director.
  • Participates in the development of new programs and the expansion of services provided by Respiratory Therapy.
