Technical Writer and Editor

Berkeley Lab is hiring a Technical Writer and Editor to work with research staff. Responsibilities include technical editing of complex scientific proposals and accomplishments, and drafting communications for the High-Performance Data Facility (HPDF). Assignments will be given as needed. The role reports to the Deputy of Operations, Computing Sciences, and will also work with the Deputy Project Director for the HPDF, a new DOE user facility led by Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and Jefferson National Lab.

What You Will Do:



  • Collaborate with Computing Sciences PIs, Division Directors, and Associate Lab Director to write and edit scientific proposals, presentation materials, and occasionally nomination packages.
  • Communicate information to various audiences, including CS Area staff, Berkeley Lab employees, Government Relations Staff, the U.S. Department of Energy, the broader scientific community, and the public. This includes workshop white papers, user engagement materials, progress reports, accomplishments, annual reports, and leadership messages.



What is Required:



  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, corporate communications, English, or a related field, or experience in technical and non-technical writing/editing in news, magazines, publications, or online communications.
  • Advanced skills in science writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, story research, and concept development to communicate complex scientific and technical achievements to various audiences.
  • Experience building relationships with high-level internal and external contacts to produce publications.
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, collaboration, and client service skills, with a demonstrated ability to maintain relationships with diverse colleagues.
  • Proven creative and critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.



Desired Qualifications:



  • Familiarity with Overleaf/LaTeX.
  • Proficient with both print and electronic publishing technologies such as web publishing software, content management systems, and digital communications practices.



Notes:



  • This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
  • This full salary range of this position is between $76,308 to $128,784 annually and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $85,860 to $104,940 annually depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
