West Virginia University Research Corporation is currently accepting applications for a (Remote) Data Analyst with the Department of Anesthesiology

About the Opportunity

This position will assist investigators with their data consultation, retrieval and management needs, performing tasks such as generating summaries, statistics and reports using query and report-writing tools, as well as Structured Query Language (SQL). Incumbent will develop data management standards, procedures, and documentation using knowledge of the healthcare regulatory environment to ensure conformance to internal and external policies, protocols, and regulations such as HIPAA. This position reports to the Principal Software Architect within the Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) core of WVCTSI.

What you'll do:



  • Provide WVCTSI investigators with customized data sets by extracting and reporting data from clinical databases such as Epic Clarity, Epic Caboodle, Common Data Model OMOP, N3C Data Enclave.
  • Independently handle large, complex research data requests requiring deep understanding of database structure, data models, clinical variables of interest.
  • Simultaneously respond to and work on multiple projects while being able to prioritize urgent requests.
  • Demonstrate expert proficiency in SQL programming, Spark SQL, use of Oracle SQL Developer, Microsoft SQL Server (SSMS), and other data extraction/visualization platforms.
  • Use knowledge of medical ontologies, terminologies and classification systems (such as ICD10, CPT, LOINC, SNOMED) to build, define clinical concepts facilitating research.
  • Regularly meet PIs and clinical teams leading research projects to advise, consult and provide updates on data pull requests.
  • Timely meet nationwide data and clinical teams conducting research using National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) platform to discuss data action plan, update changes and monitor progress.
  • Act as a mentor to new hire analyst roles within WVCTSI, provide education and support on data retrieval from clinical databases.
  • Identify relationships and trends in data, as well as any factors that could affect the results of research.
  • Develop data models for applications, metadata tables, views or related database structures.
  • Design and develop data marts for researchers to simplify the reporting process.
  • Develop innovative solutions for researchers needing statistical assistance for generated data sets, using knowledge of SAS, R or other statistical software.
  • Develop data management standards, procedures, and documentation using knowledge of the healthcare regulatory environment to ensure conformance to internal and external policies, protocols, and regulations such as HIPAA.
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of patient information.
  • Perform quality control audits to ensure accuracy, completeness, or proper usage of clinical systems and data. Create supporting documentation, such as metadata and diagrams of entity relationships, business processes, and process flow.
  • Design and implement warehouse database structures in collaboration with software architects.
  • Develop and implement data extraction procedures from other systems, such as administration, billing, or claims.
  • Collaborate with system architects, software architects, design analysts, and others to understand business or industry requirements.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Health Informatics, Computer Science or related field required;
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in extensive data analysis, reporting role;
  • Epic Clarity, Caboodle, Cogito, Clinical Data Model proficiency/certifications required;
  • Experience with N3C Data Enclave preferred.
  • Familiarity with healthcare research preferred
  • Skilled at effective data collection and creating effective customized reports.
  • Basic Proficiency in Programming Languages (C, C++, Python)
  • Effective time management skills at meeting deadlines.
  • Skilled at using SQL and mathematics to solve problems.
  • Skilled at identifying and verifying appropriate clinical source documentation for data reporting.
  • Knowledge of regulatory aspects of protocol management.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Maintains skills in, or knowledge of, professional principles, legal and/or reporting requirements affecting area of responsibility.
  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software problems.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
