Research Assistant

The Climate and Ecosystem Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Research Assistant to conduct innovative research on degrading recalcitrant carbon. Under supervision, you'll help design enrichment media, monitor growth, assay metabolites, and utilize DNA-based tools to identify communities and isolates.

What You Will Do:



  • Assist with sampling from different environments.
  • Process samples in the laboratory for analysis of DNA metabolites.
  • Assist with the development of enrichment media and metabolic assays with related chemical stocks preparation .
  • Monitor microbial growth and depletion of carbon and other metabolites.
  • Share results and data on shared systems.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook of all work performed.
  • Maintain standards of cleanliness of the work area and a safe and productive work area for research.



What is Required:



  • Experience in working with soil and sediment.
  • Experience in performing assays to characterize microbial metabolites.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to demonstrate persistent effort of work (e.g. determination).
  • Ability to communicate effectively.



Desired Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in enrichment of soil and sediment microbes.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, and basic statistics.



Notes:



  • This is a full-time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • The full hourly range for this position is $21.79 - $31.69. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
