Investments Office Job Description

Smith College's Investment Office has an opening for an early-career Investment Analyst in their Boston office. You will have the opportunity to learn from a small team of dynamic professionals in the industry and work alongside them to continue to build out the portfolio.

THE POSITION

The Investment Analyst will support Smith's Chief Investment Officer and Directors of Investments in the management of Smith's $2.7 billion endowment. This individual will play an instrumental role in the development of the college's portfolio and investment team as Smith in-sources its endowment from the outsourced investments office model. This individual will have a generalist role across Smith's public equity, absolute return, leveraged buyout, venture capital, and real asset portfolios. In addition, they will support portfolio management activities such as performance tracking, asset allocation, and operations. The successful candidate should be committed to and passionate about the college and its mission and should be motivated by the opportunity to help build an innovative, high-performing investment portfolio and a world-class investment office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct qualitative research and quantitative analysis supporting the management of the investment portfolio.

  • Work with senior team members to monitor existing investments and develop analytical insights on the portfolio to assess investment strategy execution across managers, funds, and asset classes.

  • Support the senior members of the investment team in the quantitative and qualitative investment due diligence process of fund managers, including analysis of investment strategy, process, organization, portfolio positions, and performance.

  • Identify and implement tools and resources used in connection with fund manager sourcing and market monitoring.

  • Attend and participate in fund manager meetings.

  • Assist in preparing investment committee memos.

  • Create and maintain models for performance reporting, portfolio analysis, and liquidity forecasting.

  • Utilize, maintain, and update research management and portfolio management software systems.

  • Contribute to ad-hoc projects related to improving investment process, portfolio monitoring, operations, and risk systems.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree with a strong academic record; all majors are encouraged to apply.

  • No investment experience is required, but candidates should possess strong critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and leadership skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

  • Rigorous analytical, research, critical reasoning, and modeling skills including proficiency in Excel.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.

  • Highly collaborative and team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills.

  • Self-confident individual who is able to evaluate all sides of an issue, engage in interactive discourse, and provide objective advice and recommendations with conviction to support sound decisions.

  • Nimble thinker and creative problem-solver.

  • Flexible, adaptive, and proactive with a "roll up your sleeves" mentality.

  • Results- and performance-oriented, but comfortable working in a small, collaborative team environment.

  • The highest level of integrity, intellectual capability, honesty, and ethics.
