  • Position Summary



    • The MaineHealth Institute for Research BioBank is located at the MaineHealth Maine Medical Center hospital in Portland, ME. BioBank personnel collect biospecimens after surgical and other procedures that would otherwise be discarded, following an Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved protocol and with patient informed consent. These biospecimens are an important resource and support the research of our physicians and scientists.

      The BioBank Assistant will conduct a variety of procedures under the general supervision of the Director of the Center for Applied Science and Technology, Dr. Anne Breggia, or her designee. They assist BioBank personnel and other medical personnel as appropriate. Responsibilities of this position include: set-up, process, and maintain the day-to-day technical tasks of the BioBank, recognize problems or deviations in BioBank process and procedure and notify appropriate personnel, master routine techniques and procedures relevant to overall goals of the BioBank. Position availability is directly related to grant funding and/or the BioBank's revenue stream.

      Following training, the person in this position will be responsible for:


    • Following departmental protocols, procedures, policies to maintain quality operations.
    • Interacting with patients and patient care teams to obtain consent for bio-specimen donation.
    • Evaluating, processing, storing, and distributing bio-specimens (blood, tissue, etc.) for research.
    • Working within electronic database to enter and retrieve specimen inventory and clinical data.
    • Interacting with collaborators through written and oral communication.
    • Performing daily quality control and equipment monitoring (centrifuges, freezers, refrigerators, balance).
    • Working under the general supervision of the Center Director or designee.

    • The ideal candidate will have an Associate degree (required) or Bachelor's degree (preferred) in a biological, health sciences, or related field.

  • Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)



    • Education: Associate degree in related field required. Bachelor's degree preferred.


    • License/Certifications: N/A


    • Experience: One year of relevant experience preferred.


    • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate and work effectively.


    • Visual acuity, manual dexterity, math skills and a scientific acumen are required.
