Job Summary

The Getty Research Institute seeks a fulltime Library Assistant II to join the Circulation team at the Library Annex. This job is located in Valencia, California 30 miles north of the Getty Center. Reporting to the Library Annex Circulation Supervisor, the Library Assistant II will work both under little supervision and within a team-based environment, focusing on the ongoing tasks associated with the circulation of general collection materials including pulling, sorting, and shelving books, charging and discharging materials, scanning for Interlibrary Loan, and editing online records in our library system. The Getty Library uses the Ex-Libris suite of hosted products: Alma, Primo, and Rosetta. The Library Assistant II will perform physical end processing of material such as marking, housing, repair, and evaluating the condition of materials. The Library Assistant II may work on occasion at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, CA.

Major Job Responsibilities

      May assist and resolve moderately complex problems for staff and library users
    • May assist in processing, caring for, and reformatting collections
    • May assist with general collections end processing
    • Uses various library software applications to execute moderately complex transactions
    • Maintains the general collection stacks
    • Assists with the ongoing tasks associated with the circulation of general collection materials including pulling, sorting, and shelving books and serials.
    • Checks materials in and out using the Alma library system
    • May staff a reading room.
    • Participates in special projects as assigned


Qualifications

  • Undergraduate coursework in art history or related discipline preferred
  • Minimum 2 years related experience


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with library researchers
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Familiarity with at least one foreign language preferred
  • Experience with industry standard software suites as appropriate to assigned duties
  • Experience with library circulation systems, bibliographic databases, and library specific software application preferred
  • Ability to handle rare and unique materials with care
  • Experience handling fragile or brittle materials preferred
  • Physical activity for extended periods at various times throughout the day including lifting library materials weighing up to 40 pounds and pushing heavy book carts
  • Ability to climb industrial ladders required in order to page and shelve from the collections stored on 12-foot high bookshelves
  • Good manual dexterity required
  • Ability to work in partnership with others
